Words With Nothing Behind

Meaning · English
Imagining is a turning of the mind that follows on words and the ideas they carry, while nothing real stands behind it as its object.
Three words carry the sutra. Shabda is word, a spoken sound. Jnana is knowledge, here the idea a word brings up. Anupati means following along behind. So the turning follows a word and the idea that comes with it. Vastu is a real thing that is there. Shunya is empty. Vastu-shunya means empty of any real thing. Vikalpa is the turning itself: a construction, an imagining, a picture built by language. The plain sense: a word is spoken or thought, an idea rises, and the mind goes on as if it had met something. Nothing was met. No perception, inference or testimony stands behind it. It is not error either, since nothing is mistaken for something else. Patanjali says it because he is listing every turning of the mind-field, the citta. Sound knowing is named in 1.7 and false knowing in 1.8. Speech and thought make a kind that fits neither. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, holds that this turning is neither true knowing nor error. Ordinary talk runs on it, and a hearer follows it, though no object lies behind the phrase. Later commentators keep this core.
Someone says "the edge of the sky", and a picture forms at once: a line, a rim, a place to stand. Everyone understands the phrase, yet no such edge exists. The word raises the picture and the picture feels like something seen. That is vikalpa: understanding that runs on words alone.
1. Pick one ordinary hour today, such as a walk or a meal, and listen to your own thoughts as sentences. 2. When a thought arrives, ask quietly: is there something here I am seeing or hearing now, or only a word and its picture? 3. Notice three phrases that feel solid but have no object you could point to, such as "my future" or "what people think". 4. Do not argue with them. Name each one, "words only", and carry on.
