Sleep Is Also a Vritti
Yoga Sutras 1.10
Meaning · English
Sleep is a turning of the mind that rests on the sense of absence, when nothing is present for it to hold.
Four words carry this sutra. Vritti is a turning, a wave in the mind-field. Pratyaya is the content the mind holds, the idea it is aware of. Alambana is a support, something to lean on. Abhava is absence, a lack. Nidra is sleep. Read together: sleep is a turning of the mind whose support is the sense of absence. In deep sleep nothing is seen, heard or thought. The mind still leans on that blankness, and Patanjali counts the leaning as a vritti. Why say it? The sutras just before it describe turnings that look like activity: false understanding and imagining built from words. A reader could think the mind is quiet whenever it is not busy. Patanjali answers that blankness is not stillness. Sleep is the fourth of the five turnings and is listed with the rest. Vyasa's commentary gives the reason: a person wakes and says, I slept well, or, my mind was heavy and I knew nothing. Such a memory could not arise unless something had been experienced, so a mind-state was present during sleep. On the points that matter here, the commentators follow his reading.
A thick curtain is drawn across a window. The room looks dark and empty, yet the curtain is there, and it is what the eye meets. In the same way, in sleep the mind meets a blank and rests against it. The blank is still something held.
1. Tomorrow morning, in the first minute after waking, before reaching for your phone, ask what the night left behind: heavy, light, or nothing at all. 2. During the day, when your mind feels blank from tiredness, notice that blankness. Ask whether it is quiet or only dull. 3. Say the difference to yourself in plain words, once, and carry on with your day.
