The Taste Behind Everything
Taittiriya Upanishad 2.7.1
Meaning · English
Before, all this was unformed; from it the formed world arose. It made itself, so it is called well-made. That is the taste of things; finding it, one is glad.
At first all this was unformed, without names or shapes. From that came the formed world. No one outside built it. It made itself, so it is called well-made. That self-made source is the sap, the taste that makes anything enjoyable. Getting that taste, a person becomes glad. If gladness were not present in that open space, nothing would breathe. Resting in what is unseen, nameless and unsupported, a person loses fear. Opening the smallest gap between oneself and it brings fear back, even for a learned person who does not reflect.
Stir a spoon of sugar into a glass of water until it disappears. Look anywhere in the glass and you cannot find it, yet every sip is sweet. The source works the same way. It cannot be seen or pointed to, yet it is the sweetness that makes anything worth tasting.
