Company Colours the Mind

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 36.8

Meaning · English

Whether a man serves a good person or a wicked one, an ascetic or a thief, he soon takes on that person's colour, as cloth takes the colour of the dye it is soaked in.

Two words carry the teaching. Samsarga is close company: the root sense is being joined or mixed together. Rañjana, from the root for dyeing, is the taking on of colour. The verse sets them side by side. Vidura says that anyone who spends time with a person, in service or in daily dealings, is slowly dyed by that person. The list is deliberate: good and wicked, a man of austerity and a thief. No kind of person is outside the rule. Nor does the reader get to say the rule applies only to weak people. The word for soon matters too. The change is quick, and the one changing seldom notices it, just as cloth does not feel itself darken. Nilakantha reads the lines as a caution about whom one sits beside and obeys, since habits and judgment pass from companion to companion. Vidura speaks to a king who cannot sleep. Dhritarashtra keeps close the people who flatter him and feed his wishes. Vidura's point is that the king should look at the act he is about to take, who will be carrying it out, and what company has shaped the purpose, before anything begins. A plan can carry the colour of its advisers without anyone saying so.

A white shirt left in a bucket with a red cloth turns pink without anyone touching it. Nothing was done to the shirt; it only stayed in the water. A person who keeps steady company with a group is the shirt, and the company is the bucket.

1. Tonight, write down the three people whose opinions you hear most often this week. 2. Next to each name, note one habit, phrase or attitude of theirs that you have picked up. 3. Before the next decision you make, ask who advised you, and whether the purpose is yours or theirs. 4. Spend ten minutes this week with someone whose manner you admire, and notice what you carry away.
