The Best Kind of Person

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 36.13

Meaning · English

The best of people wish well for everyone and never set their hearts on another's suffering. They speak the truth, they are gentle in how they carry themselves, and they hold their own desires and anger in check.

Vidura describes the first rank of people, the uttama, which means the highest or topmost. Three words carry the verse. Sarvabhuta-hita is a wish for the good of all beings, with no one left outside it. Satya is truthful speech; its root sense is what is, so the speaker's words match the facts. Dama, here the state of having the senses and passions in hand, comes from a root meaning to tame, as one tames an animal. Now the clauses. This person wants everyone to prosper. He never fixes his mind on someone else's misery, so he does not plan it or enjoy it. His speech is true. His manner is humble. And his passions are under his own rule. Notice that every item is a matter of inner conduct before it is outward action. Vidura speaks to a king who cannot sleep, on the eve of a war that his own sons are pushing forward. The king wants to know how to be steady, and Vidura answers by describing the ranked worth of a person. The reason he gives is plain: the one who has mastered himself is the one others can trust. Nilakantha's commentary is not drawn on here, and nothing is added to the text.

A farmer who wants a field watered first walks the channel and closes the leaks in his own ditch. Only then does water reach the far rows. Self-rule works like that: until anger and craving are patched at home, goodwill drains away before it reaches anyone else.

1. Pick one hour today, such as your commute or a meal with others, and watch for the first flicker of irritation or wanting. Name it silently and let it pass without acting on it. 2. Before you speak in one conversation today, check that what you are about to say is true. Say only that. 3. Tonight, spend two minutes wishing a person you find difficult to have a good day tomorrow. Notice whether your mind resists.
