Casting the Mind Outward

Vijnana Bhairava 51

Meaning · English

In whatever way, in whatever place, let the mind be thrown to the end of twelve. Moment by moment, as its turnings wear thin, a difference shows within days.

Three words carry it. Dvadashanta is dvadasha, twelve, and anta, end: the end of twelve, the place the mind is sent. Kshipet comes from a root meaning to throw or fling. The mind is cast, not held or fixed. Kshinavritti joins kshina, worn thin, with vritti, a turning or movement of the mind. Vailakshanya is a distinctness, a being unlike what you were. The first clause sets no conditions: in whatever way, in whatever place. Posture, setting and mood are all left open. The second clause gives the single act: the mind is thrown to the end of twelve. The third gives the rhythm: moment by moment, every moment, not once. The fourth gives the result as a gradual wearing down. The mind's turnings thin out, and within days a difference appears. It is stated as a difference, not as arrival. This works as a doorway because it asks for no new moment. Any ordinary moment, in any place, already has a mind in it, and the instruction is to throw that mind outward from inside the moment. The answer to how his nature is reached is that it needs nothing set apart. It needs the same act repeated.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are. Change nothing about the place or your posture. 2. Throw your mind to the end of twelve. Send it lightly, like tossing a ball, without aiming hard. 3. When you find the mind back among its stories, throw it again. Do not scold yourself. 4. Keep throwing, moment by moment, and do not stop to check whether anything has changed. 5. After ten minutes, let it go. Do the same on the next day and the day after.

The tradition's account is plain. The mind lives by its turnings, one thought pushing the next. When it is thrown to the end of twelve, it has no thought to rest on there. Its movements thin, the support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching, given as cause and effect. The verse names no posture, muscle, breath or inner channel, so none is claimed here. What a sitter tends to notice is less tidy. At first the mind keeps falling back into its stories, and the throwing feels like effort or like straining toward a spot. Often the attention narrows and tightens, and that is the usual way it goes wrong. Small signs of it working are quieter. The gap between one thought and the next seems a little longer. Noticing the drift comes sooner. The throw gets lighter, almost careless. Some days nothing seems to change. The verse itself speaks of days, not of one sitting, and the difference may be seen only in how the rest of the day goes.
