Burning the Inner City
Vijnana Bhairava 52
Meaning · English
Picture your own city burned by the fire of time, a fire risen from the very ground of time. When the burning is finished, a calm appearance comes.
Three phrases carry it. Kalagni is the fire of time, the fire that ends things in their season. Kalapada is where that fire stands up from: the footing of time itself, not a spark from outside. Svakam puram is your own city, the body with everything you take as yours, laid out like streets and houses. Shanta-abhasa is a calm appearance. The word is appearance, not arrival, so it is stillness showing up rather than something produced. The clauses run in order. You imagine your own city. You imagine it burned, wholly, by a fire that rises out of time. You keep imagining until the burning is complete, at the end. Then a look of peace shows. Nothing is added after the fire, and nothing is asked of you except the imagining. It works as a doorway because the ordinary moment is opened from inside. The body and its story are held together by the sense that they last. Time's own fire burns exactly that. When the thing being held is pictured as gone, the holding loosens, and what remains is quiet.
1. Sit or lie where you will not be disturbed, and let the body settle until it stops shifting. 2. Picture your own body as a city, with its streets and houses, all of it yours. 3. Picture a fire rising from time itself, not from outside, and let it burn the whole city until nothing is left standing. 4. When the mind wanders into a story or rebuilds the city, return to the fire and the burning. 5. When the burning is finished, stay in what remains and add nothing to it. 6. Stop when the stillness has stayed a while without effort.
The tradition's account: the mind moves only by leaning on a support, and here the support is the body taken as mine. Picture it consumed by the fire of time and the support drops away. The mind's movement stops for lack of anything to lean on, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the calm the text names. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The picture is hard to hold at first. The city keeps rebuilding itself, or the mind slides into a story about what is burning. Some people feel the body grow heavy or thin as the image goes on. A small sign it is working is a gap at the end of the burning, a moment with no picture and no commentary, where attention rests without effort. The usual ways it goes wrong are watching the fire like a film, flinching from it, or reaching for the calm before the burning is done. Calm that is pursued tends to slip away.
