The story · English

Rama had been listening to the sage Agastya, the hermit of the southern quarter, and something in what he heard would not let him rest. He folded his palms and spoke humbly. "You say that Ravana and Vali had strength no one could equal. But I don't think theirs comes near Hanuman's. Courage, generosity, strength, patience, wisdom, an understanding of law and of means, daring and energy all live together in him. When the monkey army lost heart at the sight of the ocean, it was Hanuman who comforted them and crossed a hundred leagues of water alone. He overcame the goddess who guarded Lanka, found Sita there, and gave her comfort when she had none left."

"And there is more. Single-handed he killed Ravana's commander, the minister's son, the servants, and one of Ravana's own sons. When the Brahma weapon let him go, he stood and reproached Ravana to his face, then burned Lanka down like fire sweeping across the earth. What I saw him do in battle was beyond Kala, beyond Vasava, beyond even the lord of riches. By the strength of the Wind-god's son I won Lanka, Sita, Lakshmana, victory, my kingdom and my friends. Without him at Sugriva's side, who would ever have brought me word of Sita?" Then Rama came to what troubled him most. "So why, when Sugriva quarrelled with Vali, did Hanuman not burn Vali to ashes like a handful of creepers?"

"Sugriva was dearer to him than his own life, and yet he stood by and watched him suffer. Did he not know his own strength then? You whom the gods themselves honour, tell me truly how this was." Agastya heard those kind words, and he answered with Hanuman sitting right there to hear. "Foremost of the Raghus, everything you've said of him is true. In strength, in speed, in mind, no one equals Hanuman. But long ago the ascetics laid a curse on him, and their curses never fail: he would never be aware of the whole of his strength. What he did as a boy I hardly have the words for. Still, Raghava, if you want so much to hear it, I'll tell it. Listen with a quiet mind."

"Hanuman's father was Keshari, who reigned on the mountain Sumeru, which shines like gold where the sun falls on it. Keshari had a wife, well known, named Anjana, and he loved her dearly. It was the Wind-god who fathered on Anjana an excellent son. One day Anjana went into a dense forest to gather fruit, and there she gave birth to Hanuman, a child like the bright tip of a Sala tree, and then she went away. With his mother gone, the newborn was soon wild with hunger, and he cried the way Kartikeya, the commander of the gods, once cried in the reed forest of Saras. Just then the sun came up, red as Yava flowers. Hanuman took it for a fruit, and he leapt."

"Wanting to hold that newly risen sun, the child, as bright as the sun himself, went bounding into the middle of the sky. Gods, Danavas and Yakshas watched him go in astonishment. 'Not the Wind, not Garuda, not even the mind moves as fast as Marut's son,' they said. 'If he has this force as a baby, what strength will he have when he is grown?' And the Wind, seeing his own son leaping upward, cooled himself on the snows and followed close behind, so the sun's rays would not scorch him. So, playing as children play, carried along by his father, Hanuman crossed many thousands of leagues and came near the sun. And the sun did not burn him. He was only a child, with no sin on him, and a great divine work was waiting for him."

"On that same day that Hanuman sprang for the sun, Rahu had come to seize it too. Hanuman reached the top of the sun's chariot and touched Rahu, and Rahu, the one who swallows the moon's light, saw the sun already taken and turned back. Sinhika's son went straight to Indra's house and stood before him among the gods, angry and frowning. 'Vasava, slayer of Bala and Vitra,' he said, 'you gave me the sun and the moon to ease my hunger. Why have you given them to someone else? It was the Parva, my appointed day, and I came to swallow the sun, but another Rahu was there before me and had hold of him.'"

"Indra, wearing his golden garland, was bewildered by this. He mounted Airavata, his chief of elephants, huge as a peak of Kailasa, four-tusked, trumpeting, hung with golden bells, the juice always running from his temples, and set out toward Hanuman and the sun with Rahu going ahead. Rahu raced on and left Indra behind, but when he saw Hanuman, vast as a mountain top, he fled. And Hanuman let go of the sun. He took Rahu for another fruit and leapt after him. Seeing the child coming, Rahu, with nothing of him showing but his face, gave up and ran back, crying again and again, 'Indra. Indra.' Indra understood it all from that pitiful voice. 'Don't be afraid,' he said. 'I'll kill him soon.'"

"Then Hanuman caught sight of Airavata, enormous, and thought he had found a bigger fruit still, and ran at him. He came storming upward until he rose above Indra's own head, and for a moment he looked as dreadful as the fire at the end of the world. Indra was not greatly angered, but the thousand-eyed lord of Shachi held the thunderbolt in his hand, and with it he struck the running child. Hanuman fell, and his left jaw broke. When the Wind-god saw his son struck down by Indra's bolt, he turned against the king of the gods and resolved to bring harm on every living thing. The Wind, who moves through everything, drew himself in and went into a cave, carrying his son."

"Just as Vasava can torment the world by holding back the rain, the Wind now brought every creature unbearable suffering by stopping everything that should flow out of them. Breath itself was choked. Joints stiffened as if pierced, hard as wood. Every sacrifice, every rite in the three worlds came to a stop, and the three worlds looked stricken with grief. So gods, Gandharbas, Asuras and men, their bellies swollen with trapped air, went to Brahma, the Patriarch, and folded their hands. 'Lord of beings,' they said, 'you made the four kinds of creatures and gave us the wind to keep us alive. We don't know why the wind, the lord of our lives, now shuts us in like women kept in an inner room. We have come to you for shelter. Take this affliction away.'"

"Brahma answered them. 'Listen, and I'll tell you why the wind is angry. Indra listened to Rahu and struck the Wind-god's son, and that is the offence. The wind has no body of his own, yet he moves through every body and keeps it whole. Without him a body is only wood. The wind is life, happiness, the whole world; turn away from him and there is no happiness at all. Look at the world today, dry as dead timber. Let us go where he waits. If we do not win back the son of Aditi, we will all perish.' So Brahma, the gods, Gandharbas, serpents, Guhyakas and every kind of being went to the place where the Wind sat with his wounded son. And seeing that boy in his father's lap, glowing like gold and like Baisvanar, the sacred fire, all of them, Brahma, gods, Rishis, Yakshas, even Rakshasas, were moved to pity."
