The story · English
The first night after Rama was crowned passed in the happiness of the whole city. At dawn the court singers came to the palace to wake the king, their trained voices as sweet as the Kinnaras'. "Wake, gentle hero, joy of Kaushalya," they sang. "While you sleep, the whole world sleeps with you. In strength you are like Vishnu, in beauty like the two Aswins, in wisdom like Vrihaspati, and in ruling like Brahma himself. Your patience is the earth's, your brightness the sun's, your speed the wind's, your depth the ocean's. You stand firm as a post and you are gentle as the moon. No king like you came before, and none will come after. Fame and fortune will never leave you, Kakutstha. Grace and wealth live in you always."
So they praised him, and Raghava rose from his bed with its white cover, the way Hari rises from his bed of serpents. Thousands of servants stood waiting with white vessels of water. Rama rinsed his mouth, made himself clean, and offered into the fire. Then he went into the shrine of the family god honoured by the Ikshwakus and worshipped the gods, the ancestors and the Brahmins. Afterwards he came out to the outer hall, and the people gathered round him. Vasishtha came with the chief priests, and the ministers came, bright as fire. Kings from many lands sat round Rama as the gods sit round Indra. Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna honoured him, and the servants sat near with their eyes closed.
Sugriva came with twenty of his heroic monkeys, and Bibhishana came with four Rakshasas, attending Rama as the Guhyakas attend Kubera. Learned men of good families bowed their heads to him, and men who knew the Puranas recited sacred stories in that hall. So Rama spent his days, seeing to the work of the city and the provinces. After some days he joined his palms and spoke to Janaka, king of Mithila. "You are our one refuge. You raised us, and with the help of your fearsome strength we were able to destroy Ravana. Nothing is as close and as dear as the bond between the Ikshvakus and Mithila. Take these jewels and go home to your city, and Bharata will go with you to help."
"So be it," Janaka said. "Seeing you and your gentle ways has made me glad. The jewels you have gathered for me, I give to my two daughters." When the royal sage had gone, Rama joined his palms again and spoke humbly to his mother's brother, Yudhajit of Kaikeya. "This kingdom, and I, and Bharata and Lakshmana are all yours to command. But your old father must be grieving at how long you have been away. You should go to him today. Lakshmana will go with you, carrying great wealth and many jewels." Yudhajit agreed. "Raghava, may your jewels and wealth never run out," he said. Rama bowed and walked round him, and Yudhajit set out for home with Lakshmana beside him, like Indra going home with Vishnu after Vritra was killed.
Then Rama embraced his friend Pratardana, the fearless king of Kashi. "You showed a brother's love and joy when you and Bharata arranged my crowning. Now go home to Baranasi, your lovely city with its strong walls, its good guards and its painted gates." Rama rose from his seat and held him warmly, and the king of Kashi set off quickly with his people. Then Rama turned, smiling, to the three hundred kings who had gathered. "You have all shown me great love," he said. "It was your goodness, your truth, your good sense and your strength that killed the wicked Ravana. I was only the instrument. When Bharata heard that Sita had been carried off from the forest, he called you all here. You were ready for the work. You have been away from home a long time now. I think you should go back."
The kings were delighted. "It is your good fortune, Rama, that you won and were crowned, that you got Sita back, and that Dashanana was beaten. Seeing you victorious, with no enemies left, is our greatest gain. Your praise of us is simply your own nature. You please everyone. You deserve praise, and we do not know how to give it. With your leave we will go home, but you will live in our hearts always. Only love us the same way, so that we have a place in your heart." "So be it," Rama said. They joined their palms, took their leave, and set out. The earth shook under their thousands of elephants and horses. On the road the proud kings told each other, "We never faced Ravana. Bharata called us too late. Had we come sooner, with Rama and Lakshmana guarding us across the ocean, we would have killed him ourselves."
Talking of this and much else, they came safely home to their famous cities, full of happy people, grain, wealth and jewels. From there they sent Rama presents to please him: jewels and pearls and coral, horses and carriages, elephants wild with strength, sandalwood, fine ornaments, chariots, and beautiful serving women. Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna came back to Ayodhya carrying all of it and laid it before Rama. Rama took the gifts gladly, and then gave them away again, to Sugriva, to Bibhishana, and to the monkeys and Rakshasas who had helped him win. The monkeys and the night-rangers wore Rama's jewels on their heads and their arms. Then the lotus-eyed Rama took Angada and Hanuman onto his lap and said to Sugriva, "Angada is your good son and Hanuman your wise counsellor. Both have always worked for my good and advised me well."
"So for your sake, king of monkeys, I must honour them." He took the costly ornaments from his own arms and put them on Angada and Hanuman. Then he looked with love on the great monkey leaders, Neela, Kesarin, Kumuda, Gandhamadana, Sushena, Panasa, Mainda, Dwivida, Jambavan and many more, and spoke to them gently. "You are my friends, as close as my own limbs, as my brothers. You people of the forest pulled me out of an ocean of danger. Sugriva is blessed, and so is anyone with friends like you." He gave them fine clothes and ornaments and embraced every one of them. The monkeys lived happily in Ayodhya, feasting on fragrant honey, cooked meat, fruits and roots. More than a month went by, and because they loved Rama it felt like a moment.
Rama was happy too, among the shape-changing monkeys, the mighty Rakshasas and the bears, and so the second month of winter passed. Then Rama said to Sugriva, "Gentle friend, go home to Kishkindha, which neither gods nor demons can take, and rule there in peace with your counsellors. Look on Angada always with love. Care for Hanuman, Nala, your father-in-law Sushena, Tara, Kumuda, Neela, Satabali, Mainda, Dwivida, Jambavan king of the bears, Keshari and all the other heroes who gave their lives to my service. Never do anything to displease them." He embraced Sugriva again and again. Then he spoke kindly to Bibhishana. "I know you understand what is right. The people, your counsellors and your brother Kubera all love you. Go and rule Lanka well. Never let a mean thought in. Good kings enjoy the earth. My one request is that you remember me and Sugriva with love. Now go, and do not grieve."
The bears, monkeys and Rakshasas called out again and again, "Glory to Rama. Your understanding is like the Self-Born's, your strength is a wonder, and your beauty has no equal." Then Hanuman bowed. "King, let my love and reverence stay with you always. Let my devotion never waver, and let my mind cling to nothing else. Let me stay alive for as long as the story of Rama is told on earth. May the Apsaras always tell me your story. As wind scatters clouds, listening to it will scatter my cares." Rama rose from his throne and held Hanuman close. "It will be just as you say. As long as my story is told, your fame will last and your life will stay in your body. And my story will be told as long as the world lasts. I could not repay even one of your many services if I gave my life for it. Let those debts stay with me unpaid, for a friend's kindness is only truly repaid when he is in danger."
