The story · English

Arjuna had let Ravana go, and Ravana, king of the Rakshasas, felt no shame about it at all. He went back to roaming the earth. Whenever he heard of someone strong, Rakshasa or man, he went to find them and called them out to fight. In time he came to Kishkindha, the city Vali had built, and stood there in his golden garland demanding battle. Vali was not at home. Tara, her father Sushena, and Prince Sugriva came out to meet him. 'King of the Rakshasas,' they said, 'the one who could stand against you is not here. What other monkey would dare to face you? But wait a little. Vali has gone to the meeting place of the four oceans to say his evening prayers, the Sandhya rites. He will be back soon.'

Then they pointed. 'Look over there, Dasanana. Those heaps, white as conch shells, are the bones of everyone who came before you to fight the king of monkeys. Even if you had drunk the nectar of the gods, you would lose your life the moment you met Vali. So take a good look at this bright world while you still can, because in a little while it will be hard for you to stay alive. Or, if you are in such a hurry to die, go straight to the southern ocean. You will find Vali there, like a fire set down on the earth.' Ravana, who had shaken all three worlds, scolded Tara for her words. He climbed into his flowered chariot, the Pushpaka, and flew south. There by the ocean he saw Vali, his face red as the rising sun, lost in prayer.

Ravana stepped down from the Pushpaka and crept forward without a sound, meaning to seize Vali. Vali, letting his eyes wander, saw him coming and knew exactly what he intended. It did not trouble him in the least. A lion does not stir for a hare, nor Garuda for a snake. Vali thought, 'This wicked Ravana is coming to grab me. I will tuck him under my arm and carry him across the three great oceans. Everyone will see my enemy hanging there like a snake in Garuda's grip, arms and legs dangling, clothes slipping loose.' So he stayed silent, chanting, steady as a mountain. Though his back was turned, he heard Ravana's footsteps come within reach. In one movement he caught him as Garuda catches a serpent, clamped him under his arm, and shot up into the sky.

Away Vali went, scratching Ravana again and again with his nails as he flew, the way wind tears through clouds. Ravana's councillors rushed after them, shouting, 'Vali, Vali,' trying to free their king. Among them Vali looked like the sun among clouds. They could not catch him; just the swing of his arms and thighs wore them out. Even mountains move aside when Vali passes, never mind creatures of flesh and blood. He climbed higher than any bird can fly and finished his prayers above the ocean, then went on, honoured by the beings of the sky, to the western ocean, the northern, the eastern, thousands of leagues apart, Ravana under his arm the whole way. At last the son of Indra, worn out from carrying him, came home and came down in the gardens of Kishkindha.

He pulled Ravana out from under his arm and, laughing and laughing, asked, 'So, where have you come from?' Ravana, amazed, his eyes trembling with exhaustion, said, 'King of monkeys, you are like great Indra. I am Ravana. I came to fight you, and you have beaten me. What strength, what courage. You carried me like an animal across the four oceans. Only the mind, the wind and Garuda move that fast, and so do you. Now I want to be your friend for ever, with fire as our witness. From today, wives, sons, city, kingdom, food and clothing, all of it we share.' They lit a fire, embraced, and walked arm in arm into Kishkindha like two lions entering a cave. Ravana lived there a month, like Sugriva himself, until his councillors took him away. Such was Vali's strength, the teller said to Rama, and still you burned him down as fire burns locusts.
