The story · English

On the banks of the river Nerbuda, not far from where Ravana, lord of the Rakshasas, was gathering flowers for his worship, another king was at play. This was Arjuna, King of Mahismati, foremost of the victorious, and he was bathing in the river with his wives all around him, like a great elephant among a thousand she-elephants. He wanted to test the strength of his thousand arms, so he set them against the river and held back her flow. The Nerbuda, dammed by the arms of Kartavirjarjuna, flooded her banks and began to run backwards. Her waters rose as high as in the rains, carrying fish and crocodiles with them. That swollen current rushed toward Ravana, as if Arjuna had sent it at him, and swept away every flower he had gathered.

Ravana left his worship half-done and looked at the river. She seemed like an unwilling girl being pulled along. Her waters were rising and running east, out of the west, yet farther on the river lay in her natural state, quiet as a calm woman, and the birds sat there without a care. Ravana wanted to know what had made her rise. Without a word, he pointed with a finger of his right hand to Shuka and Sarana. The two brothers flew west through the sky. Half a league on, they saw a man playing in the water among women. He was as huge as a Sala tree. His hair floated on the water, and his eyes were red with drink. With his thousand arms he held back the river, the way Mount Sumeru holds the earth.

A thousand beautiful women surrounded him. Shuka and Sarana took in that fearful sight and hurried back to Ravana. "Lord of the Rakshasas," they said, "there is a man, we don't know who, as huge as a Sala tree, playing with women and holding back the Nerbuda like a dam. His thousand arms keep the waters back, and they keep throwing up great waves." Ravana heard them and said, "This is Arjuna." He set out at once to fight him. As he went, a wind full of dust rose roaring, and the clouds rumbled and poured rain. With him went Mahodara, Mahaparswa, Dhrumakshya, Shuka and Sarana. Soon they reached the riverbank, and there was Arjuna among his women. Ravana's eyes went red with pride and anger.

He turned to Arjuna's ministers. "Go and tell the king of the Haihayas that Ravana, lord of the Rakshasas, has come to fight him." The ministers stood up with their weapons. "Good Ravana," they said, "you know very well when a fight is fit to be fought. Our king is drunk and playing with his women in the water, and this is when you want to fight him. If you are set on it, stay here tonight. Or, if you can't wait, kill all of us first, and then fight the king." At that, Ravana's councillors, who were hungry, killed some of the ministers and ate others. A terrible uproar broke out on the banks of the Nerbuda. Arjuna's warriors fell on Ravana and his ministers with hundreds of arrows, darts, spears and thunderbolts.

Arjuna's warriors roared like the sea full of crocodiles and monsters. But Shuka, Sarana and the rest, raging and showing their own strength, began to cut down Arjuna's soldiers. Frightened messengers ran to the king in the water and told him what Ravana and his ministers were doing. Arjuna heard them. He said to the women, "Don't be afraid," and rose out of the water like an elephant. His eyes went red with fury, and he blazed like the fire at the end of the world. He snatched up his club, for he always fought with golden clubs, and went after the Rakshasas like darkness chasing the sun, swinging it as he went, fast as Garuda. Then Prahasta stood in his way, mace in hand, like the Vindhya range blocking the sun.

Prahasta hurled his iron mace and roared like Yama, and its head blazed like the red tips of Ashoka flowers. Arjuna was not shaken at all. He turned the mace aside with his club. Then he lifted that huge club, five hundred hands long, and went after Prahasta. One swift blow brought Prahasta down, and he fell to earth like a mountain peak struck by Indra's thunderbolt. When they saw Prahasta fall, Maricha, Shuka, Sarana, Mahodara and Dhrumakshya ran from the field. With his councillors gone, Ravana came at Arjuna himself. Then began a fight that would make anyone's hair stand on end, the thousand-armed king of men against the twenty-armed king of the Rakshasas. They took up their clubs and fought, roaring like thunderclouds, like two bulls, two oceans, two moving mountains.

Like mountains taking blow after blow of thunderbolts, they bore stroke after stroke, and every quarter of the sky rang with the crash of their clubs. When Arjuna's club struck Ravana's chest, the sky flashed for a moment like burning gold, as in lightning. When Ravana's club struck Arjuna's chest again and again, it glowed like a great firebrand. Neither tired. They fought as Bala and Vasava fought in the old days, wounding each other like bulls with horns and elephants with tusks. Then Arjuna, in a rage, struck Ravana's chest with all his strength. But Ravana was protected by a boon of the gods, and the club broke in two and fell, as if a weakling had thrown it. Still, the blow hurt him. Ravana, in tears, drew back four feet and sat down.

Arjuna saw that Ravana was overcome, sprang on him, and seized him, as Garuda seizes a serpent, as Vishnu bound Vali. When Dasagriva was bound, the Siddhas, the Charanas and the gods cried, "Well done, well done," and showered flowers on Arjuna. The king roared again and again, like a tiger with a deer in its grip. Then Prahasta came to his senses, saw Ravana bound, and went after the king of the Haihayas in great anger. The Rakshasa army surged like the sea in the rains. "Let him go, let him go," they shouted. "Wait, wait." They threw hundreds of clubs and darts. Arjuna was not moved. He bore every weapon, turned them back with his own fearsome ones, and scattered the Rakshasas the way wind scatters clouds.

Then, with his kinsmen around him, Arjuna went home to his city carrying Ravana bound, as Indra once carried Vali, and the Brahmanas and citizens showered him with flowers and fried paddy. The gods told Pulastya that Ravana had been caught, which was like hearing that someone had caught the wind. Moved by love for his son, the great sage flew through the sky, swift as wind and thought, to Mahishmati, and entered that city, full of happy, well-fed people, like Brahma entering Indra's Amaravati. The gatekeepers saw the fearsome Rishi coming like the sun walking on foot, and they told the king. Arjuna went out to meet him with his palms joined above his head, his priests before him carrying Madhuparka and water to wash the sage's feet.

Arjuna bowed and offered Madhuparka, a cow and water. "Sir," he said, his voice catching with joy, "a visit from you is hard to come by. Seeing you, my city has become Amaravati. Today my birth is blessed and my penance has borne fruit, for I bow at feet the gods have worshipped. My kingdom, my sons, my wife and I are yours. Tell me what to do." Pulastya asked after his piety, his offerings and his sons. Then he said, "Foremost of kings, you have bound my son, before whom the wind and the ocean stand still. Your prowess is matchless in the three worlds. You have drunk up his glory and shown your own. Now, my son, release Dasanana."
