The story · English

Darkness fell over the field, and in it gods and Rakshasas fought blindly, crushing one another, drunk on their own strength. Only three could see through that darkness: Indra, Ravana and his son Meghanada. Ravana looked around and found his whole army cut down in a moment. He roared in fury and turned to his charioteer. "Take me to the far side of the enemy's host. I will send the gods to Death with my weapons. Indra, Kubera, Varuna, Yama, I will kill them all and stand above every one of them. Don't be afraid. Drive. This is the second time today I've told you. We are waiting here by the Nandana grove. Take me to the hill where the sun rises." The charioteer gave the horses their heads, and they ran wherever they liked through the enemy ranks.

Indra understood what Ravana meant to do. From his own chariot he called to the gods. "Listen to me. We must defeat the Ten-necked one while he is still alive. Look at him, riding as fast as the wind, moving through our army like the ocean when its waves rise at the full moon. We cannot kill him now. His boon keeps death away from him. So we will take him prisoner, and every one of us must work toward that. I enjoy the three worlds because Bali was taken captive. I mean to stop this wicked one the same way." Then Indra left Ravana and went off to fight elsewhere, scattering the Rakshasas. Ravana entered the host from the north, and Indra, the performer of a hundred sacrifices, from the south.

Ravana drove a hundred leagues deep into the army of the gods, pouring arrows down on them like rain. Indra saw his soldiers dying and turned back without fear, and he blocked Ravana's way. When the demons and Rakshasas saw their king caught in Indra's grip, they cried out, "We're finished. We're slain." Then Ravana's son climbed into his chariot, beside himself with rage, and drove into the worst of the fighting. Long ago Pashupati had given him the power of illusion, and now he used it. He passed into the enemy camp and struck them down. He ignored every other god and went after Indra alone, and the shining Mahendra saw him coming. The gods attacked him from all sides, and though he wore no armour, he felt no fear at all.

He shot down Indra's charioteer with fine arrows, then covered Mahendra himself in a storm of shafts. Indra left his chariot and climbed onto his elephant Airavata, and he rode about searching for Ravana's son. But the young Rakshasa had made himself invisible in the sky. He wrapped Indra in his illusion and struck him with hundreds of arrows. When he saw that Indra was exhausted, he bound him with his magic and carried him off toward his own army. The gods watched their king taken from the field by force and asked each other, "What is this?" No one could see the one who had done it. Indra himself was a master of many illusions, and still he had been carried away.

Furious, the gods turned on Ravana and buried him in arrows. He had been fighting the Adityas and the Vasus, and he was worn out. He could fight no more. His son saw his father hurt and struggling, and from where he stood unseen he called out. "Come away, father. Our work here is done. We have won. Take comfort and let the pain go. With my illusion I have taken Mahendra prisoner, the lord of the three worlds and of all the gods, and I have broken their pride. You have beaten your enemy. Enjoy the three worlds as you please. Why go on labouring? There is no use fighting again." Hearing this, the gods left the field and went home without their king.

Ravana heard his son's gentle words and stopped fighting. Then he spoke to him with deep affection. "You have added glory to our whole line. You fought like a man of great power, and you have conquered the gods and their king, whose strength had no equal. Go now to the city. Take Indra in your chariot, with soldiers all around you. I'll follow soon, happy, with my counsellors." So the son of Ravana went home with his army and his chariots, bringing the king of the gods with him, and he dismissed the warriors who had won the day. After Mahendra's defeat, all the gods gathered behind Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, and went to Lanka. There they found Ravana with his sons and brothers around him.

Brahma stood in the sky and spoke calmly. "Ravana, my son, I am pleased with your son. What prowess, what strength, equal to yours or greater. You have conquered the three worlds by your own power, and your promise has borne fruit. I am pleased with both of you. This son of yours will be known in the world as Indrajit, the one who conquered Indra. He will be powerful and no one will stand against him. Now release Mahendra. What do you want from the gods in return?" Indrajit answered, "If you ask, lord, I want immortality." Brahma said, "No created being on earth is wholly immortal, not birds, not beasts, not the mightiest of creatures." So Meghanada named another price.

"Then hear what I want for releasing Shakra. When I make offerings into the fire before battle, wanting to conquer my enemies, let a chariot with horses rise out of the flames. As long as I stand on that chariot, let me be immortal. And if I ever go into a fight without finishing my offerings, let me be destroyed. Others win immortality through long penance. I will win mine by my own strength." Brahma said, "So be it." Meghanada set Indra free, and the gods went back to their own realm. But Indra was not himself. His divine brightness had left him. He sat anxious and lost in thought. Brahma saw him like this and said, "Why did you commit that great wrong, long ago?"

"Once I made creatures from my own mind, all of one colour, one speech, one appearance. Nothing marked one from another. I thought about them a long while, and then I made a woman unlike them. I took the finest features from every being and shaped her, and I named her Ahalya, because there was nothing ugly or blameworthy in her. Then I wondered whom to give her to. You, Indra, proud of your rank, already thought of her as your wife. But I placed her in the care of the great Gautama, and after many years he returned her to me. Seeing his patience and his discipline, I gave her to him in marriage, and the gods were disappointed. You went to his hermitage anyway, burning with desire and anger."

"You took Gautama's form and forced yourself on her, and Gautama saw you there. In his anger he cursed you: 'You will fall into the hands of your enemies in battle. This vile desire you started will spread among mortals, and half the guilt of everyone who commits it will fall on you. Your throne will never be secure, nor the throne of anyone who rules the gods.' Then he turned to Ahalya and took her beauty from her, so that all creatures would share in it. She pleaded, 'Indra deceived me in your shape. I did not do this willingly.' Gautama said, 'Rama will be born in the line of the Ikshwakus, Vishnu in human form. When you see him and welcome him as a guest, you will be purified and live with me again.'"
