The story · English
When the sun went down, the mighty Ravana halted his army on the mountain and made camp. The moon rose, clear and bright as the mountain itself, and the great host, with all its weapons, fell asleep. Ravana lay on the summit and looked out at the caves and trees silvered by the moonlight. The forest below was full of beauty: groves of Karnikar in bloom, Kadamba and Vakula, ponds of open lotuses, and the waters of the Mandakini running through it all. There were Champaka and Ashoka, Punnaga and Mandara, mango and Patala, Lodhra, Pryangu, Arjuna, Ketaka, Tagara, coconut, Priyala and Panasa, and many other trees besides. It was a night made for looking, and the king of the Rakshasas lay awake, looking at all of it.
The night was full of sound as well. The Kinnaras were singing, sweet-voiced and full of longing, and their songs filled the mind with delight. The Vidyadharas danced happily with their companions, flushed with wine, their eyes red from drinking. From the house of the lord of riches came the music of the Apsaras gathered there, sweet and clear as the ringing of a bell. The wind shook the fragrant trees, and flowers came down in showers until the whole hill smelled of them. That cool wind, heavy with honey and pollen, blew across Ravana where he lay, and it stirred his desire. The songs, the flowers, the cold air, the beauty of the hills, the rising moon, all of it worked on him, and again and again he gazed at the moon and sighed heavily.
Just then the foremost of the Apsaras, Rambha, came along that way, her face like the full moon. She was dressed in fine ornaments, scented with sandal paste, with Mandara flowers in her hair and the flowers of all six seasons about her. She wore green, the colour of rain clouds, and was as lovely as Sree herself. Ravana saw her passing through the middle of his soldiers. He got up and, overcome by lust, took her by the hand while she shrank from him. Smiling, he said, 'Where are you going, beautiful one? Whom are you going to please tonight? Who is so fortunate? Who is more handsome than me, Indra, Vishnu, the two Ashwins, that you walk past me? Rest here on this rock. There is no lord in the three worlds but me. Dashanana, lord of the lords of the three worlds, asks you with folded hands. Come to me.'
Rambha trembled. She folded her palms and said, 'Please, be kind. You should not speak to me like this. You are my elder. If anyone else tried to harm me, you are the one who should protect me. I am telling you the truth: I am your daughter-in-law.' She stood with her face lowered, every hair on her body standing on end at the sight of him. The Ten-necked one said, 'If you were my son's wife, then you would be my daughter-in-law.' 'I am, by every right,' Rambha said. 'Your brother Vaisravana has a son he loves more than his own life, known through the three worlds as Nalakuvara. He is a Brahmin in virtue and a warrior in courage, fire in his anger and the earth in his patience. He asked me to come to him tonight. These ornaments are for him. I belong to no one else. He is waiting for me. Let me go, and walk the path of the good.'
Dashagriva answered her mildly. 'You call yourself my daughter-in-law, but that word belongs to a woman with one husband. It is the ancient law of the gods that Apsaras have no husbands. They are no one's wife.' And having said this, the Rakshasa forced himself on her. When he let her go, her ornaments and garland were gone, and she looked like a river churned up by elephants. Her hair was undone and her hands shook. Trembling like a flowering creeper in the wind, ashamed, her palms folded, she went to Nalakuvara and fell at his feet. 'What is this?' he asked her gently. 'Why are you lying at my feet?' Sighing and shaking, she told him everything. 'Dashagriva camped here tonight on his way to heaven. He caught me, and I told him the truth, that I am his daughter-in-law. He would not listen. Forgive me. A woman's strength can never match a man's.'
Nalakuvara, son of Vaisravana, was filled with rage. He sat in meditation, and in a moment he saw that all she had said was true. His eyes red with anger, he took water in his palms, rinsed his mouth as the rite required, and laid a terrible curse on the lord of the Rakshasas. 'Because he took you against your will, he will never again be able to take an unwilling woman. If ever, driven by lust, he forces a woman who does not want him, his head will split into seven pieces.' The moment the curse left his lips, burning like a flame, the drums of heaven sounded and flowers fell from the sky. Brahma and the other gods rejoiced, for they saw in it the end that would come to Ravana. When Dashagriva heard of the curse, his hair stood on end, and he turned his desire away from unwilling women. And the faithful women he held captive, hearing of Nalakuvara's curse, were filled with great joy.
