The story · English

Ravana, lord of the Rakshasas, was roaming the earth and frightening everyone he met. One day, in a forest, Narada, the foremost of sages, came down to meet him, riding on a cloud. Ravana sat in his flying chariot, the Pushpaka. He greeted the sage, asked after his health and asked why he had come. Narada, shining with a splendour no one could measure, looked down from the back of his cloud and spoke. "Lord of the Rakshasas, son of Visrava, stay a moment. Your strength and your fame please me. Vishnu once pleased me by destroying the Daityas, and you have pleased me by troubling the Gandharvas and the serpents. Now I have something to tell you. If you want to hear it, listen carefully."

"Why do you kill these men, my child?" Narada asked. "Not even the gods can kill you, but these people are already dying. Old age wears them down. Hundreds of illnesses wear them down. Great dangers crowd around them on every side. They never even see what is good for them. Heaven has already struck them with hunger, thirst and grief, so do not weaken them further. Look at them. Some spend their days dancing and playing music, while others weep with tears running down their cheeks. They are tied to their mothers and fathers, their sons, their wives and their friends, and they give little thought to the life that comes after this one. Why torment a race that ruins itself? Every one of them must go to Yama's city in the end. So conquer Yama, and you will have conquered them all."

Ravana laughed and bowed to the sage. "You love the games of gods and Gandharvas, and you enjoy a war," he said. "I am ready to go down to the lowest worlds to conquer them. I will take the three worlds, bring the serpents and the gods under my rule, and churn the depths for nectar." Narada said, "Who but you could make that journey? The road to the city of the lord of the dead is very hard to travel." Ravana laughed again. "Then it is as good as done. I will take that road to Yama, the son of the sun, and kill him. In my anger I have sworn to defeat all four guardians of the world." He saluted the sage and set off along the southern road with his councillors.

Narada stayed behind and thought it over. How could anyone conquer Time itself? Yama judges every act, good and bad. He rewards and he punishes, and the three worlds tremble for fear of him. What trick could Ravana possibly have? Narada was curious, so he hurried to Yama's city to see the fight for himself. He found Yama sitting before a fire, offering into it the good and bad fruits of what people had done. Yama welcomed him with water and asked, "Are you well, sage? Is righteousness holding firm? Why have you come?" Narada told him, "The Rakshasa called Ravana is on his way to bring you under his rule. I came quickly because I do not know what will happen to you." Just then they saw the Pushpaka in the distance, blazing like the rising sun and scattering the darkness.

Ravana rode in and looked around him. Everywhere he saw people reaping the results of what they had done in life. Yama's soldiers stood about, grim and terrible to look at. He saw people being tortured and screaming. Worms and fierce dogs tore at them. Some were swimming in the Vaitarani, a river running thick with blood. Some were scorched on burning sand, or pierced in a forest of sword-sharp leaves, or cut with razors in the hell called Raurava. Thin, pale and caked with dirt, with their hair hanging loose, they ran about begging for water. He passed them by the hundreds and the thousands. He also saw the righteous enjoying their rewards. Those who had given cows drank milk. Those who had given rice ate rice. Those who had given homes lived in mansions, with music and song all around them.

Then Ravana used his great strength to free the people who were being tormented for their sins. All at once they were released, and they had not even hoped for it. The guards of the dead were furious and charged at him. A roar went up on every side as Yama's warriors closed in by the hundreds and thousands. They swarmed over the Pushpaka like bees, striking it with clubs, darts, maces and spears, and they smashed its seats, platforms and gateways. But the chariot had been made strong by Brahma's power and could not be destroyed. Each time it was broken, it took its old shape again. Ravana's councillors fought back with trees, rocks and whole blocks of buildings. Soon they were covered in blood, and the councillors on both sides hacked at each other without mercy.

Then Yama's strongest warriors left the councillors alone and turned on Ravana with a storm of spears. They pierced him through and through until he was red with blood and looked like a kinsuka tree in flower. He threw spears, maces, rocks and trees back at them, but they broke his weapons and closed around him like clouds around a mountain. They beat him until he could not move. His armour was torn open. He left his chariot and stood on the ground. In a moment he came to his senses, took up his bow and stood there like Death itself. He set the divine Pasupata arrow to the string, shouted "Kill them, kill them," and let it fly, as Shiva once shot at Tripura. It raced on like a forest fire, and most of Yama's army fell burned on the field. Ravana and his councillors roared until the earth seemed to shake.

Yama heard the roar and knew his army was gone. His eyes turned red with anger. "Bring my chariot," he told his driver. He climbed in. Death stood in front of him with mace and weapon in hand, and beside him was the Rod of Time, glowing like fire. When Time showed itself in that fury, the three worlds shook and the gods in heaven trembled. Yama's horses, as fast as thought, carried him to the battlefield. Ravana's ministers saw that chariot with Death standing in it, and they lost their nerve. "We cannot fight this," they said, and they ran. Ravana felt no fear at all. Yama hurled spears that pierced him to the bone, and Ravana answered with arrows that fell like rain. For seven nights they fought, until Ravana was driven back and knocked senseless.

The gods, the Gandharvas, the Siddhas and the great sages gathered to watch, with Brahma at their head. The fight was like the end of the world. Ravana drew a bow as bright as Indra's thunderbolt and filled the sky with arrows. He hit Death with four, the charioteer with seven, and struck Yama with thousands. Fire and smoke poured from Yama's mouth. Death, raging, said, "Let me go. I will kill this wicked Rakshasa. I have brought Hiranyakasipu, Namuchi, Shamvara, Vali, Vritra, Bana and the whole earth to an end. No one lives once I have looked at him. This is simply what I am." Yama said, "Stay where you are. I will kill him myself." He took up the Rod of Time. It burst into flames and seemed ready to burn the Rakshasa up, and everyone fled from it.

The gods were frightened. Then Brahma appeared and spoke to Yama. "This must not happen. I gave Ravana a boon, and you must not make my word false. Whoever falsifies my word makes the three worlds false. I made this rod to bring death to every creature. If it strikes him and he lives, my word to you is false. If he dies, my boon is false. If you care for these worlds, keep my word true." Yama said, "I will hold back the rod. You are our lord. But since I cannot kill him, what is left for me to do here? I will disappear from his sight." And he vanished there and then, with his chariot and his horses. Ravana proclaimed his victory, climbed back into the Pushpaka and left Yama's city. Yama, glad at heart, went up to heaven with Brahma, the gods and the sage Narada.
