Ravana, mighty-armed, was ranging the earth, and he came to Himavan and began to circle the mountain. There he saw a young woman in a dark deerskin, her hair matted, living like a saint and shining like one of the gods. She was keeping hard vows, and she was beautiful. Ravana was overcome with desire, and he laughed as he spoke to her. 'Why are you living against your own youth? This life does not suit your beauty. Your loveliness could drive people mad with longing. A hermit's life is for the old. Whose daughter are you, gentle lady, and what vow is this? Who is your husband? Whoever has you as his wife is blessed on this earth. Tell me everything. For whose sake are you putting yourself through this?'
The girl, whose only wealth was her austerity, received him as a guest should be received, with every courtesy. Then she answered. 'My father is Kusadhwaja, a Brahmarshi of boundless power, the son of Vrihaspati, gracious, and as wise as Vrihaspati himself. While that great soul was at his daily study of the Vedas, I was born to him out of the sacred words themselves, and so I am called Vedavati. The gods came to my father asking for me, and the Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the Rakshasas and the Pannagas too. He gave me to none of them. Listen, and I will tell you why. The son-in-law my father had chosen was Vishnu, sovereign of the gods and lord of the three worlds. He would give me to no one else.'
'When he heard this,' Vedavati went on, 'a king of the Daityas named Sumbhu, proud of his strength, flew into a rage. One night, while my father lay asleep, that wicked one killed him. My mother, a woman of the highest goodness, left alone and grieving, took my father's body in her arms and went into the fire with him. So I have set my heart on Narayana, to fulfil what my father wished. I made that promise, and I have kept these hard austerities ever since. Now I have told you everything. Narayana is my husband, and no one else, no other man. I know who you are, King. Go now, son of Paulastya. Through my austerities I know all that happens in the three worlds.'
Ravana stepped down from the front of his chariot, struck through with desire, and spoke again. 'Since this is your intention, you must be very proud. You have the eyes of a young antelope. Piling up merit is for the old. You are perfect, the jewel of the three worlds, and your youth is slipping away. I am the lord of Lanka. I am Dasagriva. Be my wife and enjoy every pleasure you want. And who is this Vishnu? In courage, in austerity, in pleasure, in strength, he is not my equal, this one you are waiting for.' Vedavati said, 'Do not speak like that about Vishnu, lord of the three worlds, before whom every creature bows. No one with any sense runs Narayana down, King of the Rakshasas. No one but you.'
At that, the night-ranger grabbed her by the hair. Vedavati, furious, turned her hand into a sword and cut her hair clean off where he held it. Then she blazed with anger, as if she would burn him where he stood, and she built a funeral pyre to end her life. 'You are vile,' she said. 'You have shamed me, and I do not want to live. I will go into the fire right here, in front of you. You have dishonoured me in this world, so I will be born again to bring about your destruction. A woman cannot kill a man bent on evil. And if I curse you, I lose all my austerity. But if I have ever done good, ever given, ever made offerings to the fire, I will be born the pure daughter of a good man, and not from any mother's womb.'
Having said this, she walked into the burning fire, and flowers fell like rain all around from the sky. Then the one telling this tale said to Rama, 'Lord, she is the one who was born as the daughter of King Janaka. She is your wife, mighty-armed one, and you are the eternal Vishnu. That enemy, huge as a mountain, was struck down long ago by her anger, and now she has slain him through your strength beyond any man's. This woman of great goodness would rise again on the earth like a flame from a field turned by the plough. She was born as Vedavati in the Krita age. In the Treta age, to destroy that Rakshasa, she was born in the Maithila line of the great Janaka.'
When Vedavati had gone into the fire, Ravana climbed into Pushpaka and roamed the earth again. At Usiravija he found King Marutta holding a sacrifice with the gods themselves present. The priest was Samvartta, a Brahmarshi and the brother of Vrihaspati. The gods saw the Rakshasa, unbeatable because of his boon, and feared defeat, so they took the shapes of animals. Indra became a peacock, the king of righteousness a crow, Vaisravana a lizard, Varuna a swan, and others other creatures. Ravana walked into the sacrifice like an unclean dog and said to the king, 'Fight me, or say you are beaten.' Marutta asked, 'Who are you?' Ravana laughed in contempt. 'Anyone else in the three worlds knows me. I beat my own brother and took this chariot from him.'
Marutta said, 'So you are proud of defeating your elder brother. A thing done against what is right, a thing everyone condemns, is nothing to praise. What goodness earned you your boon? Stay where you are. You will not leave alive. Today my arrows send you to Yama.' He took up his bow and arrows and went out to fight, but Samvartta stood in his way and spoke with love. 'Listen to me. Do not fight. If this sacrifice to Maheswara is left unfinished, it will burn up your line. A man consecrated to a sacrifice does not fight or rage. Victory is never certain, and this Rakshasa is hard to beat.' Marutta set down his bow with the arrow still on it and calmly went back to the sacrifice. Shuka, Ravana's minister, took him for beaten and cried, 'Victory to Ravana.' Ravana devoured the great sages there, drank his fill of their blood, and went off across the earth.
When he was gone, the gods took back their own forms and spoke to the creatures who had sheltered them. Indra said to the peacock, 'I am pleased with you. You will never fear snakes, your feathers will carry a hundred eyes, and when I send the rain you will dance for joy.' Until then the peacock's wings had been plain blue. The king of righteousness said to the crow, 'No sickness of birds will touch you, nor fear of death, unless men kill you. When you eat, the hungry dead of my realm will be fed along with your kin.' Varuna told the swan on the Ganga, 'Your colour will be white as the moon, as clean foam.' Once swans had blue-tipped wings and breasts green as young grass. Vaisravana told the lizard on the mountain, 'Your head will always shine gold.' Then, the sacrifice finished, the gods went home with the king.
