The story · English

Ravana, king of the Rakshasas, had just beaten his own brother, the lord of riches, and taken from him the flying chariot Pushpaka. Flushed with that victory, he flew on to the great wood of reeds where Mahasena was born. The reeds were gold, and the sunlight caught in them like a net, so the whole forest shone like a second sun. Ravana climbed the mountain to look down into the heart of that forest, and suddenly Pushpaka stopped in the air. It had been built to go wherever its rider wished, and now it would not move. Ravana turned to his councillors. "Why won't it carry me over this mountain? Who is doing this?" Wise Maricha answered, "There must be a cause, my king. Perhaps Pushpaka has never carried anyone but the lord of riches, and it will not go without him."

While they were still talking, someone came walking up to them. It was Nandi, the attendant of Bhava. He was short and stout, dark yellow in colour, with a shaven head and short arms, and he was frightening to look at. He was not the least afraid of the Rakshasa king. "Stop, Ten-necked one," Nandi said. "Sankara is at play on this mountain. No one may come near him now. Not birds, not serpents, not Yakshas, not gods, Gandharvas or Rakshasas." Ravana's eyes went copper-red with anger and his earrings shook. He leapt down from Pushpaka. "Who is this Sankara?" he demanded, and strode to the foot of the mountain. There stood Nandi beside his lord, leaning on a blazing spear, looking like a second Sankara. Ravana saw his monkey face and burst out laughing, a roar like thunder rolling through clouds.

Nandi, who was Sankara's other self, grew angry and spoke to the Ten-necked one. "Dasanana, you laughed at me for my monkey shape, and your laughter cracked like thunder. So hear this. Monkeys will be born with my shape and my strength, and they will destroy your race. They will have teeth and claws for weapons. They will be fierce, fast as thought, hungry for battle, bursting with power, like mountains that walk. They will crush your pride and your might, and your courtiers and your sons with them. I could finish you right now, night-wanderer. But I will not kill you, because your own deeds have already killed you." As the great one finished speaking, drums sounded in the heavens, and a shower of flowers fell from the sky.

Ravana paid no attention. He came right up to the mountain and said, "Gopati, I will tear this mountain out by the roots. It stopped my Pushpaka in its path, and I mean to know what power did it. Bhava plays here like a king. Does he not know there is something to fear now?" Then he wrapped his arms around the mountain and lifted it all at once. The whole mountain trembled. The attendants of the god who lived there shook with it, and Parvati trembled and held fast to Maheswara. Then Mahadeva, greatest of the gods, Hara himself, pressed the mountain down with his big toe, as easily as if he were playing. Ravana's arms, strong as pillars of stone, were pinned beneath it. He screamed in rage and pain, and the cry shook all three worlds.

His councillors thought it was the thunder that comes at the end of the world. Indra and the gods shook on their paths, the sea went wild, the mountains trembled, and the Yakshas, Vidyadharas and Siddhas asked one another what it could be. Then the councillors said to their king, "Dasanana, win over Uma's lord, the blue-throated Mahadeva. We see no other refuge for you. Bow down and ask him for shelter. Sankara is kind. If he is pleased, he will show you favour." So the Ten-faced one bowed to the god whose banner bears the bull, and began to sing hymns to him, one after another. For a full thousand years he wept and praised. At last Mahadeva was pleased and let go of his hands. "Dasanana, your hymns have pleased me," he said. "Your terrible cry frightened the three worlds, so your name shall be Ravana, the one who makes creatures cry out."

"Go now, wherever you wish," Mahadeva said. But Lanka's lord asked, "If you are pleased, give me a boon. Brahma has already made me safe from gods, Gandharvas, Danavas, Rakshasas, Guhyakas, Nagas and every other great power. Men I don't count; they are too small to matter. Brahma has also given me a long life. Now I want to live out my days in peace. Give me a weapon." So Sankara gave him a dazzling sword called Chandrahasa, and peace for the rest of his life. "Never treat this sword lightly," he warned. "If you do, it will surely come back to me." Ravana, bearing his new name, bowed to Mahadeva and climbed into Pushpaka. Then he roamed the earth. The brave Kshatriyas who would not submit, he destroyed with all their followers. Others, wiser, knowing him unbeatable, simply told him, "We are conquered."
