It began with sleep. Sent by the lord of creatures, Sleep came to Kumbhakarna in her own form and pressed down on him with all her strength. Kumbhakarna went to his brother, who sat on his throne, and said, 'King, Sleep is pulling me under. Have a house built for me.' So the king set his finest builders to work. They raised a hall a full yojana across and two in area, open and lovely to look at, with pillars of gold and crystal, stairs of lapis, nets of tiny bells, gateways of ivory, and daises set with diamonds and crystal. It was graceful everywhere and made to last, like a fine cave in the side of Mount Meru. Kumbhakarna lay down in it, and for many thousands of years he did not wake.
While Kumbhakarna slept, Dasanana gave himself no rest at all. He killed the divine sages, the Yakshas and the Gandharvas, and he went into the lovely gardens of the gods, Nandana among them, and tore them apart. He moved through the world the way an elephant at play churns up a river, the way the wind throws down trees, the way a thunderbolt splits a mountain peak. Word of this reached Vaisravana, the righteous lord of riches, his elder brother. He knew what Dasagriva was and what his family had always been, and still he felt a brother's love for him. So he sent a messenger to Lanka to ask after his welfare and to speak for his good.
The messenger came to Lanka and went first to Bibhishana, who welcomed him with honour and asked why he had come. Bibhishana asked in turn after the king and their kin, and then led him in to Dasanana in his court. The king sat on a splendid couch with a costly cover, blazing with his own power. The messenger greeted him with the single word 'Victory,' and stood silent. Then he spoke. 'King, I will tell you everything your brother said. It is worthy of your father's line and your mother's. Enough of doing wrong. Change your ways now, and if you can, hold to what is right. I have seen Nandana ruined. I have heard of the sages you killed, and of the gods arming against you.'
'You have ignored me completely,' the messenger went on, in Vaisravana's words, 'but even when a boy goes astray, his friends should still protect him. I went to the slopes of the Himavan under a hard vow. There I saw the lord of the gods with Uma, and my left eye happened to fall on her, only to know who she was. Her power burned that eye; it went dim and tawny. I took another peak and kept a long vow of silence. When it ended, Mahesvara said to me, gladly, I made this vow once, and now you have kept it too; there is no third. Be my friend. Your eye has seen the goddess; your name will be Ekakshipingali. Since then I have walked with Sankara. Turn back from this. The gods and sages are planning your death.'
Dasagriva's eyes went red. He rubbed his hands together and ground his teeth. 'Messenger, I have heard you. Neither you nor the brother who sent you will live. The keeper of riches does not speak for my good, and the fool wants me to hear how he made friends with Mahesvara. I will never forgive these words. Until now I put up with him, because he is my elder and I should not kill him. Now that I have heard this, my mind is made up. On the strength of my own arms I will conquer the three worlds, and for his sake alone I will send all four guardians of the world to Death.' With that, the lord of Lanka cut the messenger down with his sword and gave the body to the Rakshasas to eat.
Ravana had the blessings for a journey spoken, climbed into his chariot, and set out for his brother, meaning to conquer the three worlds. With him went six counsellors, Mahodara and Prahasta, Maricha, Shuka and Sarana, and the brave Dhumraksha. He passed cities, rivers, hills and forests, and in a moment reached Mount Kailasa. The Yakshas saw him coming and could not stand before him; knowing he was their king's brother, they ran to the lord of riches and told him everything. He gave them leave, and they went out to fight. The armies met with a roar like the ocean, and the mountain seemed to shake. Each counsellor took on a thousand Yakshas. Ravana plunged into the enemy and was struck with maces, clubs, swords and darts until blood ran from him in hundreds of streams, and he did not flinch.
Then Ravana raised a mace like the very rod of Time and walked into the Yaksha army, sending warrior after warrior to Yama. He burned through them like fire through a field of dry grass and kindling. What little was left, Mahodara, Shuka and the others scattered, the way wind scatters clouds. Yakshas lay wounded and broken; some, weaponless and worn out, sank down holding each other, like riverbanks giving way to water. The sky grew crowded with watching sages and with fallen warriors rising to heaven. Seeing his best men give way, the lord of riches sent more. A Yaksha named Sanyodhakantaka charged in with a great force and many chariots, and struck Maricha with his discus as if he were Vishnu himself. Maricha toppled from the mountain like a falling star. He came to, fought again, was beaten, and fled.
Ravana went on to the palace gate, which was worked with gold, lapis and silver. There the gatekeeper, a Yaksha named Suryyabhanu, stood in his way. Ravana did not stop. He walked straight through. Suryyabhanu tore the gateway from the ground and struck him with it, and Ravana stood there bleeding in streams, like a hill with red ore running down its sides. Yet he took no real harm, because of the boon Brahma had given him. Then he struck back with that same gateway, and Suryyabhanu was burned to ash and gone. When the Yakshas saw what Ravana could do, they all broke and ran. Frightened, exhausted and pale, they threw down their weapons and hid themselves in rivers and caves.
Seeing thousands of his best Yakshas in terror, the lord of riches turned to a mighty Yaksha. 'Manichara, first of the Yakshas, kill this wicked Ravana, who is bent on sin, and be the shelter of the brave ones still fighting.' Manibhadra went out with four thousand Yakshas, armed with maces, clubs, barbed darts and bludgeons, wheeling and striking like hawks. Some shouted for a fight, some said they had had enough, some called for more. Gods, Gandharvas and sages watched in wonder. Prahasta killed a thousand Yakshas, Mahodara another thousand, and Maricha, in his fury, two thousand in the blink of an eye. The Yakshas fought straight; the Rakshasas fought with illusion, and that gave them the edge. Dhumraksha struck Manibhadra in the chest with a bludgeon and could not move him. Manibhadra answered with his mace to Dhumraksha's head, and Dhumraksha fell senseless.
Ravana rushed Manibhadra, took three darts, and struck him on the head so hard that his crown was pushed in on one side; from that day the Yaksha's head stayed hollow there. Then the lord of riches came, mace in hand, with Sukra, Praushthapada, Padma and Sanka. 'You would not stop when I told you,' he said. 'You will learn what follows, in hell. You have drunk poison and will not take the cure. People earn fortune, beauty, strength and sons by good deeds; I will not talk with you further.' Ravana's counsellors fled. The brothers fought on without tiring. Ravana met fire with Varuna's weapon, became a tiger, a boar, a cloud, a mountain, the ocean, then brought his mace down on his brother's head. Vaisravana fell bleeding, like an asoka cut at the root, and Padma and the others carried him to Nandana. Ravana took the Pushpaka, Brahma's chariot that flies wherever the mind wishes, descended from Kailasa, and sat in his court shining like Fire himself.
