Ravana Takes Lanka

The story · English
Word travelled down to the lowest regions that the night-rangers had won boons. When Sumali heard it, he set his fear aside and climbed back up into the world, and his followers came with him. His counsellors rose too, burning with anger: Maricha, Prahasta, Virupaksha and Mahodara. Sumali came before Ravana, the Ten-necked one, and took him in his arms. "My child," he said, "what luck this is. Through you we have the thing our hearts were set on. You have won the best of boons from the greatest being in the three worlds. That terrible fear of Vishnu, the fear that drove us out of Lanka and down into the depths, is gone now."
"So many times," Sumali went on, "that fear struck us, our enemies hunted us, and we left our homes and fled below with everyone we had. Lanka was our city. Rakshasas lived there. Now your brother lives there, the wise lord of riches. If you can win it back, by restraint or by gifts or by sudden force, it will be a great thing done. You will be lord of Lanka. You will raise up the Rakshasa race that has sunk so low, and you will be lord of everything." Ravana looked at his mother's father. "The lord of riches is our elder," he said. "You should not speak this way." He said it calmly, and Sumali understood him and said no more.
Ravana stayed there a while. Then Prahasta came to him and spoke, quietly and humbly. "Ten-necked one, you should not talk like that. Heroes do not keep brotherly feeling. Listen to me. There were two sisters, Aditi and Diti, beautiful and devoted to each other, and both became wives of Kasyapa, the lord of creatures. Aditi gave birth to the gods, who rule the three worlds. Diti gave birth to the Daityas. Once, this whole earth, with the ocean as her garment and all her mountains, belonged to the Daityas, and they grew very strong. Then the gods brought all three worlds under their own rule. So you would not be the first to turn on a brother. Gods and Asuras did it long ago. Do what I tell you."
Ravana thought about it for a moment, and his heart lifted. "Very well," he said. That same day, full of eagerness, he set out for the forest with the night-rangers. At Trikuta he stopped and sent Prahasta ahead as his envoy. "Go to the lord of riches," he said, "and tell him this from me, gently. King, the city of Lanka belongs to the great-souled Rakshasas, and you have settled yourself in it. That is not right for you. If you give it back, I will be very glad, and you will be keeping to what is right." Prahasta went to Lanka, which the giver of riches guarded well, and stood before that generous ruler. "Your brother has sent me," he said, and passed the message on.
"This beautiful city," Prahasta said, "was once home to Rakshasas of terrible strength, with Sumali at their head. That is why he asks it of you. Grant it to him, child. He is asking humbly." Vaisravana heard him out and answered. "My father gave me this city when it stood empty of night-rangers. I have lived here and filled it with giving and with honour. Go and tell the Ten-necked one: this city and this kingdom are as much his as mine. Let him enjoy it with no enemy. While he is here, may my kingdom and my wealth never be divided." Then the lord of riches went to his father Visrava, bowed before him, and told him what Ravana wanted. "Tell me, father," he said, hands joined, "what should I do?"
Visrava, the great sage, answered his son. "Listen to me. Ravana once said this same thing in front of me. I scolded him hard. Again and again I told him in anger that he was throwing away his duty and his honour. But the boon has spoiled his judgment. He can no longer tell who deserves respect and who does not, and my curse has made his nature fierce. So, my son, go to Mount Kailasa and make your home there with your people. The Mandakini flows there, the best of rivers, covered in golden lotuses bright as suns, in lilies and blue lotuses and every sweet flower. Gods and Gandharvas, Apsaras, serpents and Kinnaras come there to play. Do not go to war with that Rakshasa. You know what boon he holds." Out of respect for his father, Vaisravana left for Kailasa with his wives, sons, counsellors, chariots and wealth.
Prahasta hurried back, glad, to where Ravana sat with his counsellors and younger brothers. "Lanka is empty," he said. "The giver of riches has given her up and gone. Come in with us, and live there by your own ways." So Ravana entered Lanka with his brothers, his army and his followers. As the king of the gods climbs up into heaven, the enemy of the gods climbed into Lanka, a city laid out with broad highways, the city the lord of wealth had left behind. He was crowned there and made it his home, and soon its streets were crowded with night-rangers dark as rain clouds. And the lord of riches, for his father's sake, lived in a palace of fine, ornamented towers on a hill that shone like moonlight, as Indra lives in Amaravati.
Once Ravana and his brothers were settled on the throne, he turned to the matter of his sister's marriage. He gave Shurpanakha to Vidyujjibha, lord of the Danavas and king of the Kalakas. Afterwards he went out hunting, and in the forest he came upon Maya, a son of Diti, walking with his daughter. "Who are you," Ravana asked, "wandering alone in a wood with no people in it and no deer? And who is this girl with you, with eyes like a fawn's?" Maya answered. "Listen, and I will tell you everything. You may have heard of an Apsara named Hema. The gods gave her to me, as Indra was given his queen. For a thousand years I gave myself to her."
"Fourteen years ago," Maya went on, "she went away on some errand for the gods. With all my skill I built a golden palace, set with diamonds and lapis, and I lived in it alone, grieving for her. Now I have taken our daughter and come into these woods. She is the child Hema bore me. I am looking for a husband for her. Any man who cares for his honour finds it hard to be the father of a daughter, because a daughter holds two families in doubt. Hema also gave me two sons, Mayavi first, then Dundubhi. That is the whole truth. But who are you, my child?" Ravana answered him humbly. "I am called the Ten-necked one. My father is the sage Paulastya, born the third son of Brahma."
When Maya learned that this was the son of a great sage, he wanted at once to give him his daughter. He took her hand in his own and said, smiling, "King, this is my daughter by the Apsara Hema. Her name is Mandodari. Take her as your wife." "Yes," said Ravana. They lit a fire, and he took her hand. Maya knew of the sage's curse that hung over Ravana's birth. He gave his daughter anyway, out of regard for the family of Ravana's grandfather. And he gave Ravana something more: a wondrous dart, won through the hardest austerities. It was with that dart that Ravana would one day wound Lakshmana. Then the lord of Lanka went home and saw to his brothers' marriages. He gave Kumbhakarna to Vajrajwala, granddaughter of Virochana.
