Krishna as Each Kind's Best
Bhagavad Gita 10.28
Meaning · English
Among weapons I am the thunderbolt; among cows, the Kamdhenu. Among causes of procreation I am Kaamdev, the god of love; among serpents, I am the serpent Vasuki.
Krishna names four things, and in each he points to the finest of its kind. Vajra is the thunderbolt, the weapon of the gods' king, so it stands for weapons at their most powerful. Kamadhuk is Kamdhenu, the cow that yields whatever is wished for: kama means desire, duh means to milk. It stands for a cow at its most generous. Prajana is the cause of new birth, and Kandarpa, the god of love, is Krishna in that role. The text puts love at the root of new life, not mere appetite. Vasuki is the great serpent, the chief among serpents. Krishna says this to Arjuna because he is describing how his glory shows itself in the world, so that a mind that cannot grasp the whole has something to hold. Where power, giving, love or fearsome strength reaches its height, Krishna says he is there. Shankara reads such lists as marks of the Lord's presence in whatever excels. Ramanuja reads them as the chief members of classes that are all his body. Madhva reads them as the Lord dwelling within each as its inner ruler. The verse asks Arjuna to learn to see the source behind excellence.
Think of a village well in a dry season, with every field drawing from the same water. Each crop grows in its own way, but the tallest, greenest stalks show most plainly where the water runs. The finest weapon, cow, love and serpent are those stalks, and Krishna is the water beneath them.
1. Today, pick one thing you use or meet that is the best of its kind: a sharp knife, a ripe fruit, a kind neighbour. 2. Give it one full minute of plain looking, without hurry or phone. 3. Silently name what made it excel, such as strength, generosity or care. 4. Tonight, recall it once and say thank you for it, in your own words.
A retired teacher walks home at dusk. Ahead, a storm is gathering over the fields. At a gate stands a cow, calm and heavy with milk, and she feels two things at once, awe at the sky and an easy fondness for the animal. Krishna's list works the same way. Each item is chosen because it makes a person stop: the thunderbolt for power, Kamdhenu for giving, love for new life, Vasuki for sheer size and menace. Held one at a time, each becomes a place where attention can rest and wonder can rise, and from there the teacher can turn her thoughts to their source, as the text asks. Ordinary experience agrees that attending closely to one fine thing calms a restless mind more than trying to think about everything. The verse does not promise that wonder will settle her worries about the storm, her health or her loneliness. It offers a way of looking, not a shelter or a remedy.
