Powers That Hold Limits
Bhagavad Gita 10.29
Meaning · English
Among the nagas I am Ananta; among the dwellers of the waters, Varuna, god of the ocean. Among the departed ancestors I am Aryama; among those who dispense law and restraint, I am Yama, god of death.
Three words carry most of it. Ananta means 'without end': an, not, and anta, an end. Pitri means 'father', and so the fathers who have died, the ancestors. Sanyamatam, 'among those who dispense law', comes from sam, fully, and yam, to hold back or keep in check. Yama, the god of death, takes his name from the same root. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the endless serpent among nagas, Varuna among creatures of the water, Aryama among the ancestors, and Yama among those who keep order. Each time the pattern repeats: in every group there is one who stands at the head, and Krishna points to that one. The range matters. The list moves from deep water to the dead to the one who ends every life, so even the frightening and the final are named as his. The reason sits in the surrounding list: Arjuna is being given places to look, and a mind cannot hold everything at once, but it can hold one chief in each class. Shankara reads these as the Lord's power showing most clearly in each class. Ramanuja reads them as the Lord dwelling inside all things as their self. Madhva reads them as glories of a God who remains distinct from, and above, what he adorns.
In a village, each trade has one elder whose word settles disputes: one for the weavers, one for the boatmen, one for the farmers. A stranger who asks about the village is led to those elders first. Krishna names the chief of each class in the same way, so that Arjuna can see where to look.
1. Tonight, pick one thing that sets limits in your life: a deadline, a closing time, a law you follow, an elder's word. 2. Spend two minutes thinking of the order it keeps and what would fall apart without it. 3. Say a short thanks for one ancestor by name, aloud or silently. 4. Tomorrow, when a rule or limit annoys you, notice the first thought you have about it, and leave it unchallenged for a moment.
A woman lights a lamp beside her late grandmother's photograph on the anniversary of her death. She is tired, and the rituals feel like one more chore. Krishna's list changes the order of her thoughts. First, the dead are not a loss to be managed but a line she belongs to, and Aryama among the ancestors is his. Second, death is not outside the picture, because Yama is his as well, so the ending she is facing is held inside what the text calls his order. Third, she can give the evening a small shape: a name, a lamp, a few quiet minutes. Ordinary experience confirms that remembering the dead in a set way steadies a family and gives grief somewhere to go. The verse does not promise that the ache will lift, and it offers no comfort in place of a counselor or doctor if the grief becomes heavy enough to disrupt sleep, eating or daily work.
