A Devotee Among Demons

Bhagavad Gita 10.30

Meaning · English

Among the demons I am Prahlad. Among all that control, I am time. Among the animals I am the lion, and among the birds I am Garud.

Krishna goes on naming where Arjuna can find him, and he takes four examples. The first word to look at is daitya, a demon, a child of the line of Diti. Krishna picks Prahlad from that line, a figure the tradition remembers as demon-born yet devoted. So the best of a class can stand inside the class that opposes goodness. The second word is kala, time. It comes from a root meaning to count, to drive on, to bring to an end. Kalayatam, "of those who control or reckon," puts time at the head of everything that measures and governs, because every ruler is finally ruled by it. The third is mrigendra, from mriga, a wild animal, and indra, chief: the lion, chief of beasts. Garud, the great bird, is named as chief of birds. The reason is given by the whole run of verses: Arjuna is to see Krishna's glory in the world, and a thing's highest case is where that glory shows most plainly. Shankara reads these as places where the Lord's power is seen most clearly, not as the only places he is. Ramanuja reads every being as his body, with these as the finest examples. Madhva reads them as Vishnu present within each as its inner ruler. All three leave Arjuna with the same task: to learn to look.

A big clock hangs on a railway platform wall. The stationmaster, the tea seller and the sleeping porter all bend their day to it, though none of them made it. Time stands over every kind of ruler in the same way, and Krishna names it as himself.

1. Today, when a clock or a deadline decides what you do next, a bus time or a school bell, say quietly to yourself that it rules everyone alike. 2. Spend two minutes watching one bird or street animal. Notice the one thing it does better than you could. 3. Tonight, think of one person who stayed decent in a rough place. Write down one thing they did.

A young man has just started at a loading yard where everyone rounds the weight sheets in their own favour. At lunch the others look at him to see whether he will join in. Krishna's words say something to him in that moment. Prahlad is named as the best of the demons, so goodness is not ruled out by the company a person keeps. He can see that the yard's habit is one thing and his own hand on the pen is another. Time is named as the controller of all who control, and he can ask who will be reading these sheets in a year, and what he will want his name beside. He can also notice what is steady in the crowd: a lion is still a lion in any forest, and a person's character shows best where it costs something. Ordinary experience bears this out, since a small honest act among many dishonest ones is easier to see and remember. The verse does not promise that his workmates will approve, that his job will be safe, or that the fear in his stomach will go away.
