Wind, Ram, Crocodile, Ganges

Bhagavad Gita 10.31

Meaning · English

Among purifiers I am the wind. Among carriers of weapons I am Ram. Among water creatures I am the crocodile, and among flowing rivers I am the Ganges.

Four pairs, each a group and its standout. Pavana is the wind, and it comes from a root meaning to purify, to make clean. Pavatam means those that purify, so Krishna names the wind as the cleanser that moves through everything and carries stale air away. Shastra-bhritam breaks into shastra, a weapon, and bhrit, one who carries. Among all who bear arms, Krishna says he is Ram. Makara is the crocodile, named here as the great creature of the waters. Srotas means a stream, something that keeps flowing, and Jahnavi is a name of the Ganges, the daughter of the sage Jahnu. Krishna is still answering Arjuna's wish to know where to look for him. He gives a clean mover, a warrior who carries power rightly, a mighty creature and the best-loved river. Shankara takes Ram as Ram of the Raghu line, the hero of the Ramayana. Ramanuja reads the whole list as marks of Krishna being the inner self of everything named. Madhva reads it as showing Krishna as the supreme one who is more than all these. The aim is to give a mind that cannot picture the infinite something familiar to hold.

A guide leading a stranger across new country does not describe the whole land. He points at the tallest tree on each ridge and the widest bend in the river. Each landmark is small, but it lets the stranger find direction. The wind, Ram, the crocodile and the Ganges work the same way for Arjuna.

1. Step outside once today, for two minutes, and feel moving air on your face. Name it silently as the one that cleans the air. 2. When you next drink water or wash your hands, watch it flow for ten seconds without hurrying. 3. In the evening, think of the one person you know who carries strength gently, and notice what in them you trust.

A man stands at a river's edge at dawn with his father's ashes in a small pot. He has no words, and the rituals feel too large for what he is able to feel. Krishna's list gives him something to look at. The wind lifts across the water, and the river keeps moving whatever he does. He does not have to produce a feeling. He can let the wind and the current be what they are, and trust that the text says Krishna is present in them. Ordinary experience agrees that open air and moving water settle a crowded mind. Standing there, he might breathe slowly, watch the water leave, and then pour. The verse does not promise that his grief will lift, that the ashes will mean what he hopes, or that he can skip the doctor or the counsellor if the weeks that follow are too heavy. It gives him a place to rest his eyes.
