Meaning · English
Of all creations I am the beginning, the middle and the end, Arjun. Among sciences I am the science of the spirit, and among debates I am the logical conclusion.
Three ideas carry this. Krishna begins with sarga, creation, meaning everything that is put forth: worlds, bodies, events. He says he is its adi, the beginning, its madhya, the middle, and its anta, the end. So he is not only the spark that starts things. He is also what holds them while they last and what they return to. Next, adhyatma-vidya, the science of the spirit, is knowledge about the self and what lies beyond it. Krishna calls it the best among all the vidyas, the branches of learning, because the others deal with things around us and this one deals with the knower. Last, vada is the debate that aims at truth and goes on until a conclusion is reached. Of all the ways people argue, Krishna says he is that one. He gives this list to Arjuna so that Arjuna can recognise him in what is excellent, steady and decisive. Shankara reads vada as the honest inquiry, as against arguing only to win. Ramanuja reads the whole list as showing the Lord dwelling within and ruling everything as its inner controller. Madhva reads it as showing Krishna as the cause, sustainer and ender of all things, who remains distinct from them. The verse asks Arjuna to look at the whole arc of things, and at the best learning and the most honest argument, and see one source in them.
A potter lifts a pot from the wheel. Before it, there was clay. While it holds water, it is clay in a shape. If it is dropped, the shards are clay again. The verse says the same of all creation: one substance runs through the start, the middle and the end, and Krishna names himself as that.
1. Pick one ordinary thing today, such as a meal, a letter or a conversation, and notice its beginning, its middle and its end. 2. At the end, spend one minute asking what held it together while it lasted. 3. In your next disagreement, pause before replying and ask whether you are after the true answer or just after winning. Notice which one your next sentence serves.
Two brothers sit at their late father's table, voices rising over whether to sell the family house. One has stopped listening and is only waiting for his turn to speak. Krishna's words about debate change this moment in small steps. First, he names the debate that ends in a conclusion as his own, so the point of speaking becomes reaching what is true, not scoring. Second, each brother can ask what the argument is really about, and the answer may be grief and not money. Third, the talk can end with something settled, even if only a next step. The idea that creation has one beginning, middle and end also places this quarrel inside something larger than the house. Ordinary experience confirms that raised voices make careful listening harder, and that a slower pace helps. The verse does not promise that the brothers will agree, that the house question will be easy, or that the loss of their father will hurt less. Where law or money is involved, a lawyer's advice still matters.
