Death and Gentle Strengths
Bhagavad Gita 10.34
Meaning · English
I am death that seizes everything, and the source of what is yet to be. Among feminine qualities I am fame, fortune, fine speech, memory, intelligence, courage and forgiveness.
Three words carry the verse. Mrityu is death, and here it is called sarva-hara, the one who takes everything away. Udbhava is origin, a rising up. Krishna puts them side by side: he is what ends every living thing and also what brings forth things not yet born. Then he names seven qualities: fame, shri, fine speech, memory, medha, dhriti and kshama. The glossary gives shri as 'prospective', and it is usually read as fortune or grace. Medha is a retentive, discerning intelligence. Dhriti is steadiness, the courage to hold on. Kshama is forgiveness, the power to bear a wrong without answering it. In Sanskrit all seven are feminine nouns, which is why the verse says they belong to women. The reason behind the list is the same as in the chapter around it: Krishna is showing Arjuna where to look for him. He appears in the harshest fact, that everything is taken, and in the gentlest strengths, those that help a person live well. The verse asks Arjuna to see one power behind both. Shankara reads the first half as the Lord who withdraws all beings and also the source of those who will flourish. Ramanuja reads every item as a glory of the Lord who stands within all things. Both treat death and the seven qualities as belonging to one source.
A river in flood tears away a bank, and in the same season leaves behind the silt that feeds the next planting. The one water that takes also gives. Death and the quiet strengths of memory, steadiness and forgiveness are likewise shown as coming from one source.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and name one person or thing you have lost, whether a person, a house or a season of life. 2. Beside it, name one quality from the list that you still hold: a memory, a steady moment, a forgiveness you gave. 3. Tomorrow, when someone wrongs you in a small way, wait one full breath before you reply, and notice whether forgiveness is available to you.
A man stands at the graveside of a father he barely spoke to in his last ten years. He had come with a speech and now cannot remember a word of it. Instead, small things return: the smell of the workshop, a joke about a bicycle, a night his father waited up. The verse speaks to this moment by refusing to separate the two things in front of him. Death is named plainly, as the taker of everything. Then memory, courage and forgiveness are named as things that belong to the same source, so they need not be hidden from grief. He can let the loss be as large as it is. He can let the memories come without sorting them. When the old quarrel rises, he can see forgiveness as a strength he may hold, not a debt he owes. Ordinary experience confirms that grief often brings memory back unasked. The verse does not lift the sorrow, undo the silence of those ten years, or replace the care of a doctor or counsellor if the grief becomes unbearable.
