Meaning · English
Among the hymns of the Sama Veda, I am the Brihatsama. Among poetic meters, I am the Gayatri. Of the twelve months, I am the month of November-December, and of all the seasons, I am spring, the maker of flowers.
Krishna keeps naming the finest member of each group, and here the groups are sound and time. Sama means a sung hymn, a verse carried on a melody. Of all those sung hymns of the Sama Veda, he names the Brihatsama. Chhandas means meter, the measured beat that shapes a line of verse, and among meters he names the Gayatri, which is also the name of a well-known mantra. Then he turns to the calendar. Of the twelve months he takes Margashirsha, which falls in November-December. Of the seasons he takes spring, called here the kusuma-akara, literally the mine or maker of flowers. Each time the pattern is the same: in the best of its kind, the highest is easiest to see. Krishna gives this as a way for Arjuna to recognise him in what is already around him, in song, in rhythm, in the turning year. Nothing is asked of Arjuna but to look. Shankara reads such lists as places where the divine can be held in mind. Ramanuja reads them as things whose inner self is the Lord. Madhva reads them as the Lord present in each as its controller.
Think of a harvest festival in a village. Every house has its own lamp, but one lamp is lit first and carried to light all the others. Each of those flames is the same fire. Krishna points to the finest hymn, meter, month and season in the same way: as the lamp that shows what the whole row is lit from.
1. Choose one ordinary thing that comes in a cycle, such as the morning light, a song you know by heart, or the weather this week. 2. Today, give it two unhurried minutes of plain attention, with no phone in your hand. 3. Notice what it is like when you are not trying to use it for anything. 4. In the evening, say aloud one thing you saw in it that you usually miss.
A night-shift security guard walks home at first light in early December. His feet ache and his mind is still on a quarrel with his supervisor. From a loudspeaker down the lane comes a morning chant, steady in its rhythm, and the air is cool enough to see his breath. The verse would first slow him down. Krishna names song, measured verse and the turn of the year as places where the highest shows itself. So the guard may let the chant finish before he hurries on. He may notice that the cold belongs to this season and to no other. Then he may carry the quarrel a little more loosely for the rest of the walk. Ordinary experience confirms that a slow walk in clean air steadies a hurried mind. The verse does not promise that the quarrel will end, that the tiredness will lift, or that the supervisor will change. It offers one quiet stretch of the morning in which the guard is not only a worker with a grievance.
