Bhagavad Gita 10.36

Meaning · English

Of cheats, I am the gambling. Of the splendid, I am the splendor. I am victory, and I am firm resolve. Of the virtuous, I am the virtue.

Krishna keeps naming the best or strongest thing in each class, and here he starts with a surprise: gambling, the trickery of cheats. Three words carry the rest. Tejas is splendor, the glow or force that makes a person impossible to ignore. Vyavasaya is firm resolve, a mind made up and not wavering. Sattva is virtue, the clear, steady goodness in a person. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the splendor of the splendid and the virtue of the virtuous, so what draws us in a good person is his presence. He is victory itself, and the resolve that carries a person through to it. Gambling is the odd entry. Among those who cheat, Krishna says the power that rules is the gambler's pull, and even that strength comes from him. He is not praising cheating. The reason he gives is the point of the whole chapter: nothing strong or striking exists apart from him, so Arjuna should see him in contests, in glory, in goodness, and in dark places too. Shankara reads these as signs of the Lord's presence as the inner power of each thing. Ramanuja reads them as glories of a God who is the inner self of everything. Madhva also reads them as the Lord's special presence, while holding him distinct from and above all of them. All three treat the list as pointers to him, not as a ranking of worldly things.

A lamp is carried through a house at night. Its light falls on a gold coin, on a child's face, and on a muddy drain. The light is the same in all three and belongs to none of them. Krishna says the force in a winner, a saint and even a gambler is like that light, borrowed from him.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and recall one moment today when you saw real strength: a person who kept their word, held their nerve, or simply did not give up. 2. Name the quality to yourself in one plain word, such as steadiness or honesty. 3. Tomorrow, when you feel the pull toward a risk or a shortcut, stop for ten seconds and notice how strong the pull is before you decide. 4. Once this week, finish one small thing you had already decided to do, and notice what firm resolve feels like in the body.

A man stands at the kitchen door at night. He has lost most of his savings on a betting app and has not told his wife. He keeps rehearsing excuses. Krishna's list changes the moment in small steps. The pull he feels is a real force, and he does not have to pretend it is nothing, since the text names even gambling as a power. The same list names vyavasaya, firm resolve, as a power too, and he can ask which of the two he will follow tonight. Victory then means something different: not winning back the money, but walking into the room and saying it plainly. Ordinary experience says that shame grows in secrecy and shrinks a little when spoken. The verse does not promise that the debt will vanish, that the craving will stop, or that his wife will forgive quickly. A habit like this often needs a doctor, a counsellor or a support group, and the verse does not replace them.
