Meaning · English

Among the Vrishnis I am Vasudeva, and among the Pandavas, Arjuna, the conqueror of wealth. Among the sages I am Vyasa, and among the thinkers, Shukracharya, the thinker.

Krishna names four people, two close to him and two famed for their minds. Two words carry the weight. Muni comes from the sense of reflecting, and it names a sage who lives with silence and thought. Kavi means one who sees further than others, a seer who thinks and speaks with insight. He says he is Vyasa among the munis and Shukracharya among the kavis, the one whose sight is clearest in each group. The first half is closer to home. Among his own Vrishni clan he is Vasudeva, the son of Vasudev, which is himself. Among the Pandavas he is Arjuna, the man he is speaking to. So Arjuna hears himself placed on the list. The reason is that Krishna has been showing where his greatness can be recognised, by naming the finest in each kind of being, and here the kinds are people. He does not hold himself apart from the human world. He points to a clan, a brother-in-arms and a pair of great minds, and says that excellence in them is his. Shankara reads such lists as marks of the Lord's power, so that the mind can find something to hold. Ramanuja reads them as the highest forms of a world that rests wholly in God. Madhva stresses that God stays distinct from the person in whom his glory shows.

A teacher unrolls a map of several mountain ranges and puts a finger on the highest summit of each: the tallest here, the tallest there. Krishna does the same with people. He points to the peak of each kind, a clan, a warrior, a sage, a thinker, and says that each summit is where he can be seen.

1. Tonight, write down one person in your family and one person in your work or neighbourhood who does something unusually well: cooks, listens, mends, teaches. 2. Tomorrow, spend two minutes watching one of them at it, without comment. 3. Notice what you see in their way of doing it that is more than skill: patience, care, clear sight. 4. Say one true, specific word of thanks to that person before the week ends.

A quiet man sits at a family wedding while relatives praise a cousin who became a surgeon and an aunt who wrote a book. Nobody mentions him. He begins to feel like background. The verse changes that moment in steps. First, Krishna lists a clan and a single warrior alongside sages and poets, so the great and the near are named in one breath. Second, he places Arjuna, a worried man in a chariot, inside the list. Third, the man at the wedding can look at the cousin and the aunt as sights worth honouring, and not as a scoreboard he lost. He may also find that someone in the room, perhaps the cook or the old uncle by the door, has the same clear sight in their own work. Ordinary experience bears out that comparison sours our attention and admiration steadies it. The verse does not promise that he will stop feeling overlooked, that a hurt will vanish, or that real sadness needs no company or care. It gives him a different place to look, and a reason to believe he is counted.
