Meaning · English

Nishumbha, destroyer of the immortals, came on with a spear in his hand. Chandika struck him in the heart with her spear, hurled with full force. When the spear had split his heart, another being stepped out of it, very strong and very mighty, crying, 'Stand.' As he came forth, the Goddess laughed aloud, and then, with her sword, she cut off his head. He fell to the ground.

Medhas tells Suratha and Samadhi how Nishumbha ends. Three words carry it. Chandika is a name of the Goddess, from chanda, fierce: the one who is fierce when the moment asks it. Shula is the spear, a weapon that pierces straight through. Hridaya is the heart, the middle of a being, not its surface. Now the clauses. Nishumbha rushes at her with a spear. He is called the destroyer of the immortals, so he is the one who had been crushing the gods. She answers with her own spear, thrown hard, and it lands in his heart. From the broken heart another figure steps out, strong and mighty, and calls out 'Stand.', as if the fight begins again. The Goddess laughs. She does not hurry or tremble. As he comes out, she cuts off his head with her sword, and he falls. Why is this told here? Suratha lost a kingdom and Samadhi lost his family, and both still cling to what hurt them. Medhas is showing them the Goddess as the power that ends what binds, down to the heart where it hides. The being who steps out of the heart reads as the thing that remains after the first blow. The text says it is cut off the moment it appears. The story asks nothing of the listener directly. It shows that the Goddess meets the enemy's second form as calmly as the first.

A man pulls a weed and thinks the garden is clear, then a new green shoot rises from the same root. A gardener who cuts it the moment it shows leaves nothing to grow back. The second figure from Nishumbha's heart is that shoot, and Chandika is the one who cuts it at once.
