Meaning · English

Then the lion devoured those fierce demons, crushing their heads and necks in his fangs. Kali ate others, and Shivaduti ate still more. Some great demons were split open by the spear of Kaumari and perished. Others were driven off, undone by water made pure with Brahmani's mantra.

Medhas names the ones who clear the field, and each acts in her own way. The lion is the Goddess's mount, and he fights with his teeth. Kali is the dark one, her name tied to kala, time, which ends everything. Shivaduti is 'Shiva's messenger'; duti means one who carries a word. Kaumari is the shakti of Kumara. Shakti means power, from shak, to be able, and here it is also the name of her spear. Brahmani is the shakti of Brahma, and her weapon is not a blade but water cleansed by a mantra, a sacred utterance. The clauses go in order. The lion crushes demons by the head and neck. Kali and Shivaduti devour others. Kaumari's spear pierces some. Brahmani's water sends the rest away. Medhas tells it briefly and does not linger on the blows. He is speaking to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and the story keeps showing one Goddess whose power takes many forms, so that no single force stands alone against the demon host. The Devi Mahatmya's teaching is that this power is hers. The listener is asked only to notice that it comes in different shapes: tooth, spear, time, and a word spoken over water.

Think of a flooded village where help arrives in many hands at once. One crew hauls a boat, one cuts through fallen branches, one brings clean water. None of them is the whole rescue. The Goddess's powers work like this: each does a different task, and together they clear the field.
