Meaning · English
Some, torn open by the trident of Maheshvari, fell down. Others were ground to dust on the earth by the blows of Varahi's snout. Cut into pieces by Vaishnavi's discus, the demons lay in bits. Others fell to the thunderbolt let fly from the tip of Indrani's hand. Some of the asuras perished, and some fled from the great battle. Others were eaten by Kali, by Shivaduti, and by the lion, king of beasts.
Medhas is closing the account of the battle in a few lines, and he does it as a tally. Each Mother does her own work, and each leaves a different mark on the field. Two words help. Matri means mother. The Mothers are the powers of the great gods, each standing in her own form: Maheshvari with Shiva's trident, Varahi with a boar's snout, Vaishnavi with Vishnu's discus, Indrani with Indra's thunderbolt. Dana va and asura are two names for the demon host. Both mean beings set against the gods. Now the clauses. Maheshvari's trident pierces some, and they drop. Varahi's snout strikes others so hard they are crushed to powder. Vaishnavi's discus slices the demons into pieces. Indrani hurls the thunderbolt from her fingertips, and others fall to it. Then the count widens: some asuras are destroyed, some flee the field, and some are devoured by Kali, by Shivaduti and by the lion. Why does Medhas tell it this way? He is answering Suratha's wonder at how a vast army could vanish. The text's answer is that no part of it escapes. Fighters, runners and the rest are all accounted for. One Goddess has become many forms, and each form meets the enemy with its own weapon. The tale does not linger on the wounds. It is a ledger, kept short. For the listener, a king who lost his realm, it says that a power greater than any army stands behind the Mother he is being taught to know.
Think of a flood season on a river plain. One stream carries off the footbridge, another washes out the road, a third fills the wells with silt, and each leaves its own kind of damage. The Mothers are like those streams: one force, working through many channels, and each channel finishes a different part of the work.
