Shumbha's Charge of Borrowed Strength
Devi Mahatmya 10.1
Meaning · English
Seeing Nishumbha slain, his brother, dear to him as his own life, and seeing his army being struck down, Shumbha spoke in anger: "Durga, wicked one, do not carry this pride. You are puffed up with the arrogance of strength. You fight by leaning on the strength of others, and you think very highly of yourself."
Medhas is retelling what Shumbha shouted across the battlefield. Three words carry it. Bala is strength. Avalepa is arrogance, from a root meaning to smear on, like a coat of paint put over a person. Garva is pride, the swelling of a self that thinks it stands alone. Shumbha says the Goddess wears strength she did not earn. The first two lines give his grief. His brother is dead, a brother as dear to him as life, and his army is falling. Anger comes straight out of that loss. He names the Goddess Durga and calls her wicked, which is a way of refusing to face what he has just seen. Then comes the charge. In his telling, she is no match by herself. She borrows from others and fights by leaning on them. He also calls her conceited for it. The text sets this accusation down because it is the question every listener would ask. How can one Goddess overturn an army of demons? Shumbha's answer is that she cannot, and so she must be propped up. Medhas gives the words as Shumbha's, not as his own judgment. Suratha and the merchant are left to weigh them as the story goes on.
A boxer is knocked flat by the one opponent in front of him. He gets up and searches the ring for a hidden second fighter, because he cannot accept that one person did it. Shumbha does the same. Where there is one source of strength, he looks for helpers to explain it.
