"I am alone in this world. Who else is there beside me? Look, wicked one: these powers, which are my own expansions, are entering into me." Then all those goddesses, Brahmani and the rest, dissolved into the body of the Goddess. One alone remained: Ambika. "I stood here in many forms through my power. Those forms I have drawn back into myself. I stand alone in the battle. Be steady."
Three Sanskrit words carry this. Vibhuti means a manifested power or splendour, from the root bhu, to become, with the prefix vi, spreading out. Shakti is the capacity to act. Laya means melting or dissolving, from li, to cling or merge. The Goddess uses all three. Shumbha had accused her in verse 10.1 of fighting on the strength of others. She answers by asking who else there is. The text teaches that Brahmani and the other goddesses were never separate fighters. They were her own vibhutis, her powers shown outward. She tells Shumbha to look, and they enter her. The narrator, Medhas, then reports it: the goddesses led by Brahmani melt into her body, and only Ambika, the Mother, is left. She then names what happened. By her power she had stood in many forms. She has now drawn them back, and she stays alone in the fight. Her last word to Shumbha is sthira bhava, be steady. It is not a taunt. It tells him the ground he stood on, his belief that she was many and borrowed, is gone. The verse answers a question: is the Goddess one, or a crowd? The Saptashati's answer is that she is one, and the many are her own showing. It asks the listener to hold that picture. When the forms appear, she is still the single source behind them, and when they return, nothing has been lost or added.
A potter's wheel throws up a spray of wet clay in many drops, each flying separately. Then the potter's palm closes over the lump and gathers it all again into one piece. The drops were never other than the clay. The many goddesses map to those drops, and the Mother to the single lump.
