Meaning · English
Then the fight began between the Goddess and Shumbha, a dreadful fight, with the gods and the asuras both looking on. It was waged with showers of sharp arrows, with weapons in the hand and with terrible missiles, and the battle between the two grew again until it struck fear into every world. Ambika let fly divine missiles by the hundred. The chief of the daityas shattered them, each with the counter-stroke made to answer it.
Three words carry the passage. Shastra is a weapon held in the hand, from a root meaning to cut or strike. Astra is a missile that is hurled, from a root meaning to throw. The text sets both in the fight, and calls the astras terrible, and the ones Ambika casts divya, heavenly. Pratighata is a counter-stroke, a blow that strikes back against a blow, from prati, against, and ghata, a hit. Now the clauses. The duel begins between Devi and Shumbha alone, and Medhas says it is dreadful. Gods and asuras both stand watching, so neither side is hidden. Arrows fall like rain, then hand weapons, then missiles, and the fight swells until the worlds are afraid. Then Ambika looses divine missiles in hundreds, and Shumbha, called lord of the daityas, breaks each one with a counter made for it. He is no mere fool in this telling. He is a skilled fighter. Why Medhas tells it so: Shumbha had accused her of fighting on others' strength. Now there is only the one pair, and the text shows the duel openly, each side's best met by an answer. Medhas keeps the telling brief and does not linger on wounds. He is telling a king who lost his realm and a merchant cast out by his family, and the fight is the setting for the Mother who frees. The passage asks the listener only to see how evenly matched the exchange looks at this stage.
Someone throws ball after ball at a wall and each comes straight back, matched to the throw. The wall never tires of answering. The first stretch of the duel looks like this, with every missile of the Goddess met by a fitting counter from Shumbha, so that neither side seems to gain.
