Meaning · English
The divine missiles he hurled, the Supreme Goddess broke as if in sport, with a fierce roar of "hum" and the like. Then the demon covered the Goddess with hundreds of arrows. Angered, she cut his bow with arrows of her own. When the bow was cut, the lord of the demons took up a spear. The Goddess cut that too with her discus, while it was still in his hand.
Three words carry the verse. Parameshvari is the Supreme Mistress: parama, highest, and ishvari, one who rules. Lila is play, the ease of someone who is not straining. Hunkara is the sound "hum", a roar made in the throat. Now the clauses. Shumbha throws divine missiles, weapons given by gods. The text says she breaks them in lila, with a roar and the like. She uses no weapon of her own against them, only her voice. Shumbha then tries quantity and floods the air with hundreds of arrows. She grows angry, and her answer is exact: she cuts the bow, the thing that sends the arrows. Without a bow he is left with a spear, and she cuts that too, while it is still in his hand, with her discus. Each time he reaches for something new, it is taken from him. Medhas tells this to Suratha, who lost his kingdom, and Samadhi, who was cast out by his family. Both men lost what they had leaned on. The battle shows the same loss from the other side. Shumbha leans on weapons and numbers, and they give way one by one. The Goddess is called the great Maya who binds and the Mother who frees, and here the text shows only her ease. The verse asks little of the listener. It asks only that the listener notice where Shumbha's trust sits, and what happens to it.
A grown woman is calmly taking things out of a small child's hands. First a stick, then a toy, and the child's fists flail as she does it. She is not straining and she is not afraid. Shumbha is the child, and each weapon he lifts is simply taken away.
