Meaning · English

Then the lord of the daityas took up a sword and a shield, bright as the sun and marked with a hundred moons, and ran at the Goddess. As he came, Chandika cut his sword in two, and his shield too, spotless as the sun's rays, with sharp arrows loosed from her bow. She brought down his horses, and his chariot with its driver. His horses slain, his bow broken, his charioteer gone, he seized a fearsome mace, bent on killing Ambika.

Medhas tells this part of the duel as a list of losses. Four names help. Daitya means a child of Diti, one of the asura race; Shumbha is called their lord. Chandika comes from chanda, fierce, and names the Goddess in her fighting form. Ambika means little mother. Mudgara is a mace, a plain club of iron. The sequence is simple. Shumbha takes up a sword and a shield decorated with a hundred moon-shaped discs, and charges. Before he reaches her, Chandika splits the sword and the shield with arrows from her bow. Then she fells his horses and the chariot with its driver. He is left standing on the ground with no horses, no bow, no driver. The last thing he has is a mace, and he grabs it, still set on killing her. Medhas is speaking to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant who lost his family's regard. Both are still holding on to things that have already gone. The story shows an enemy who loses his things in order: blade, shield, team, chariot, driver. He is still the same fighter at the end, only with less in his hands. Medhas also names her twice in this passage, as fierce Chandika and as the motherly Ambika. The verse leaves it to the listener to notice that the one who strips him is the same one he is trying to kill.

Picture a man climbing a ladder while someone below takes away the rungs, one after another. He keeps climbing anyway, and in the end he grips a bare pole. Shumbha's sword, shield, horses and chariot are the rungs. The mace is the pole he refuses to let go of.
