If You Judge Me Ready
Bhagavad Gita 11.4
Meaning · English
If you think it possible for me to behold it, Lord, then, Lord of all mystic powers, reveal to me your imperishable self.
Three words carry this request. Manyase means "you think", from a root for thinking and judging. Arjuna does not say "show me." He says "if you judge that I can." Yogeshvara is yoga plus ishvara, master of every power of yoga. By using that name, Arjuna admits that the power to make this sight possible is Krishna's, not his. Avyaya is "not" plus "spending" or "decay", so it means what does not wear away. That is what he asks to see: the self of Krishna that does not perish. The plain sense is a request with a condition. In the previous verse Arjuna said he wished to see the divine form. Now he adds that it should happen only if Krishna thinks him able. This is Arjuna's own view in the moment, not yet Krishna's answer. He is a small human being asking to see something without limit, and he knows the gap. So he leaves the judgment of his readiness with the one who knows. Commentators read the request differently. Shankara takes it as Arjuna asking to see the Lord's real, imperishable nature. Ramanuja stresses devotion: Arjuna asks because he loves, and he depends on the Lord's grace. Madhva also holds that such a sight comes only if the Lord grants it.
A beginner stands at the foot of a tall mountain beside an old guide. He does not say "take me to the top." He says, "If you think I can make it, lead me up." The mountain is the limitless self of God, the guide is Krishna, and the "if" is Arjuna's honest admission of his own limit.
1. Choose one real request you plan to make this week: a favor, a harder task at work, a talk you have been putting off. 2. Before you ask, write one line on what would make you ready for it. 3. When you ask, add "if you think I can handle it" in your own words, and listen to the answer without arguing. 4. Afterward, notice for a few minutes how it felt to leave the judging to someone who knows more.
An apprentice electrician has watched his old mentor work the main panel for two years. Today he wants to do it himself. His first impulse is to say, "Let me, I'm ready." The verse points to another way to ask. He tells the mentor what he wants, then adds, "If you think I can." That small clause changes the moment. He puts his wish in the open, gives his mentor room to judge his readiness, and prepares himself to hear "not yet, start with the side circuits." He keeps his eagerness and drops the pretense that he already knows his own limits. If the answer is yes, he goes in careful. If it is no, he has lost nothing but a little pride. Ordinary experience bears this out: people are poor judges of their own readiness, and someone who has watched them work often sees gaps they cannot. The verse does not promise a yes, and it does not make the work safe. It also does not replace training, or a qualified person where the work calls for one. It only shows how to ask for something large while staying honest about what you are.
