Countless Shapes and Colors
Bhagavad Gita 11.5
Meaning · English
The Lord said: Behold my forms, Arjun, son of Pritha, by the hundreds and then by the thousands, of many kinds, divine, of many colors and many shapes.
Krishna begins with one word, behold, and it is a command to look. Three words carry the verse. Rupa means a form, an outline that can be seen. Divya means divine, belonging to the Lord and not to the ordinary world. Nana means various, and Krishna uses it twice, once for kinds and once for colors and shapes. He tells Arjuna to look at my forms, and he says forms, plural, by the hundreds and then by the thousands. He does not offer one picture of God. He offers a crowd of them, no two alike in color or shape. The reason is in the lines before it. Arjuna asked to see the Lord as he truly is, and Krishna answers by showing how large the answer is. A single form would hide how much there is. By calling Arjuna son of Pritha, he speaks to him as a person, a relative, and a friend. He is about to show him something vast, and he starts from that closeness. Shankara reads the many forms as the one Lord appearing as the many things of the world. Ramanuja reads them as real parts of the Lord, since all beings are his body. Madhva stresses that the forms are real and divine, while the Lord stays supreme and distinct from what he shows.
A glass prism in a sunny window throws bands of color across the wall, red, gold, green, and violet, each with its own shape. The wall shows dozens of patches, yet one light is behind them all. Krishna's many forms are the patches, and he is the light.
1. Choose one ordinary place today, a bus stop, a kitchen, or a street, and give it five minutes of plain looking. 2. Count the different colors and shapes you can find without moving, and say each one silently to yourself. 3. Choose one thing you usually pass without noticing and look at it for a full minute. 4. Notice, before you leave, whether your sense of the place has grown larger.
A man stands on a railway platform at dawn after a night shift. The train is late, his eyes burn, and all he sees is the clock. Krishna's command to behold is aimed at exactly this narrowing. Step by step, the man lifts his eyes from the clock and takes in the platform. A woman in a green shawl is holding a steel tiffin. A boy is balancing on the yellow line. Pigeons are working through a spilled bag of grain, and the sky above the roof is turning from grey to orange. Nothing about the delay has changed, but his attention now has more in it than the delay. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness shrinks what a person notices to a single worry. The verse does not promise that the train will come sooner, that sleep will be made up, or that his worry will be gone. It gives him many things to look at, and the Gita presents that as the first step toward seeing the Lord in what is there.
