Meaning · English
Behold the twelve sons of Aditi, the eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, the twin Ashvini Kumars, and the forty-nine Maruts. Behold, Arjun, scion of the Bharatas, many marvels never revealed before.
Krishna reads out a roll call of heavenly beings: the twelve Adityas, the eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, the twin Ashvins and the forty-nine Maruts. Each is a group of gods, and he asks Arjuna to look at all of them. Two words carry the weight. Pashya means behold, and it comes twice. It asks for steady looking, not a glance. Adrishta-purva means not seen before: adrishta is unseen, purva is earlier. Ashcharya, marvel, names whatever stops a person in his tracks. The reason is in the verses before. Arjuna asked to see Krishna's imperishable self, and Krishna answers by showing. He starts with the many powers that stand in the world, and he promises sights no one has been shown. He addresses Arjuna as a Bharata, a member of his old line, and so speaks to him as family. Shankara reads these gods as parts of the one Lord's universal form, not rivals to him. Ramanuja reads them as belonging to the Lord's body, as everything does. Madhva reads the sight as showing the Lord's supremacy over all the gods. The verse asks Arjuna for attention, and the text says the marvels are new even to him.
A man who has lived all his life under city lights is driven to a dark hillside. The sky he always had overhead fills with stars, group after group, each one named by the friend beside him. Arjuna is that man. Krishna is the friend, and the named groups of gods are the stars.
1. Pick one ordinary thing you pass every day, such as a tree, a doorway or a neighbour's face. 2. Today, stop for one full minute and look at it as if you had never seen it. 3. Name three things about it you had not noticed before. 4. In the evening, write those three things on paper and keep them.
A daughter stands at the back of her father's retirement party. She knows him as the strict man who checks the locks twice. Then a stranger tells how he drove through a flood to bring medicine to her family, and a young clerk says he taught her everything. She had one picture of him, and the room holds many more. Step by step: she stops correcting the stories in her head, she listens to the next speaker with her whole attention, and she keeps one question to ask him later. Ordinary experience confirms that the familiar stops being noticed because we stop looking at it. The verse says Krishna shows Arjuna what he had not seen, and 11.8 says Arjuna needs eyes given by Krishna to see it. It does not promise that she will understand her father fully, and it does not ease any grief she carries about him. It only says that one who looks again may find a great deal had been there all along.
