Valmiki Takes Sita In
Valmiki Ramayana 7.59 · read aloud in the app
The story · English
On the bank of the river near the hermitage, a woman was weeping, and the young sons of the rishis who lived there heard her. They ran to the great Valmiki, deep in his austerities, bowed to him, and told him everything. "Master, we don't know whose wife she is. She is as lovely as Lakshmi herself, and none of us has ever seen her before. She is crying as if her heart would break, all alone, like a goddess who has fallen out of heaven and lost her way. No woman like her should be left like that. She hardly seemed to us a mortal woman at all. She is close by, and she has come looking for shelter. She needs someone to protect her. Please, go and see her, and take her in."
Valmiki's long years of austerity let him see what was hidden, and he knew at once that the boys spoke the truth. He set off with quick steps, his disciples behind him, carrying the arghya, the water of welcome, in his hands. At the river he found Raghava's wife weeping like someone with no one left in the world. The light that shone from him eased her a little, and he spoke to her gently. "You are Sita, daughter of Janaka, daughter-in-law of Dasharatha, beloved wife of Rama. Your coming here is a blessing. I know why you have come. I know, too, that you are entirely pure. Through my meditation I see all that happens in the three worlds, and I see that you are innocent."
"You have come to me for shelter, Vaidehi, so take comfort. The ascetics who live around my hermitage will care for you every day as their own daughter. Accept this arghya, trust me, and set your grief down. Think of this as your own home." Sita bent and touched his feet. "It will be as you wish," she said, and with folded hands she followed him. The wives of the rishis came out gladly. "Welcome, best of rishis. It has been so long. Tell us what we should do." Valmiki said, "This is Sita, Rama's wife, Janaka's daughter. She is pure and blameless, yet her husband has given her up. She deserves your reverence, and I, your teacher, ask it of you. Look after her with great love." Then he left her in their care and went on to his hermitage.
Lakshmana watched Valmiki lead Sita away, and his heart was thrown into confusion by grief. He turned to Sumantra, the skilled charioteer. "Think of Rama's grief, now that he is parted from Sita. She is completely pure. What could be more painful than Rama living alone, having sent her away? I can see this is destiny's doing, Sumantra. No one gets past what is fated. Rama, who in his anger could kill gods, Gandharbas, Asuras and Rakshasas, has had to bow to it. Once he suffered fourteen years in the forest of Dandaka at his father's command. But sending Sita away seems far more painful, and far more cruel. The citizens' opinion is not just. What do we gain by doing so wrong a thing for the sake of a good name?"
Sumantra answered with respect. "Don't grieve for Sita, Saumitri. Long ago, before your father, this exile was foretold. When King Dasharatha asked Durvasa about your future, he said Rama would lose all his happiness and be parted from his dear wife, and in time, virtuous as he is, he would give up you, Sita, Shatrughna and Bharata. He said it before me, before Vasishtha and other great men, and the king told me, 'Charioteer, never reveal this secret.' I have always kept his word with care. But your heart is so troubled that I tell you, so that sorrow will not overwhelm you. Destiny is hard to get past. Only don't tell Shatrughna or Bharata." Lakshmana took in those grave words, and asked him to tell it all.
