Lakshmana had asked, and so Sumantra the charioteer began to tell him the secret of what Durvasa once said. "Long ago," he said, "the great ascetic Durvasa, the son of Atri, spent a whole year in the holy hermitage of Vasishtha. During that time your father, the shining and famous Dasharatha, went there to see Vasishtha, his own priest. He found Durvasa seated at Vasishtha's right hand, blazing like the sun. Dasharatha bowed humbly to both of them. They welcomed him as a king should be welcomed. They gave him a seat, water to wash his feet, the offering of honour, and fruits and roots to eat. And so your father stayed there for a while, living among the ascetics."
"Then one day at noon," Sumantra went on, "the ascetics sat together and talked of many pleasant things. In a pause in the talk, Dasharatha folded his hands, raised them up, and turned to Durvasa, whose only wealth was his discipline. 'Holy one,' he said, 'how long will my family last? How long a life has been given to Rama and to my other sons? How long will Rama's children live? And how will my line come to its end? Please tell me all of it.' Durvasa heard the king's words, and he answered him. 'Listen first, king, to something that happened long ago,' he said. 'Once, when the gods and the Asuras were at war, the demons were driven back by the gods.'"
"'The beaten demons ran for shelter,'" Sumantra said, still giving Durvasa's words, "'to the wife of Vrigu, who is your own family's priest. She promised to help them, and they stayed with her without fear. Hari, the king of the gods, saw the demons protected by her, and in his rage he cut off her head with his sharp discus. Vrigu saw his wife lying dead, and he was furious. He cursed Vishnu, the destroyer of enemies. You lost hold of yourself in anger, he said, and killed my wife, who did not deserve to die. So, Janarddana, you will be born among mortals. And there you will live parted from your wife for many long years.'"
"'But once the curse was spoken,'" Sumantra said, "'Vrigu was deeply pained, and he worshipped Vishnu. Vishnu, who loves those devoted to him, answered: After I have killed Ravana and the others, I will bear this curse for the good of mankind. That same Vishnu, king, has now been born as your son, and he is known as Rama. Rama will surely taste the fruit of Vrigu's curse. Yet he will rule Ayodhya for a long time, and everyone who follows him will be happy and prosperous. After ruling eleven thousand years, he will go to the world of Brahma. No one will ever defeat him. He will perform many horse sacrifices with rich gifts, and found many royal houses. And Sita will bear him two sons.'"
"When Durvasa had told the past and the future of your family," Sumantra said, "he fell silent. King Dasharatha bowed to the two great ascetics and went home to Ayodhya. I was there, and I heard every word. All this time they have stayed in my heart. A sage's words never go to waste. Just as he said, Rama will set Sita's two sons on the throne in Ayodhya, and nowhere else. So, Lakshmana, do not grieve for Sita or for Rama. For their sake, be patient." Lakshmana listened to these wonderful words, and his heart grew glad. He praised Sumantra again and again. They went on talking like this as they travelled homeward, until the sun went down. That night they rested on the banks of the Keshini.
