The sages had finished speaking, and Rama, called Kakutstha, said to them, "Tell me what you need me to do, and your fear will be ended." Bhargava answered for them. "Hear where our fear began, my king. Long ago, in the Krita age, there lived a great Asura named Madhu, eldest son of Lota, of the line of Diti. He was kind to Brahmanas, gentle to anyone who came to him for shelter, and wise. The gods loved him. Rudra himself drew a dart out of his own being, a weapon of fearful power and blinding light, and gave it to Madhu. 'Your goodness has pleased me,' he said. 'As long as you never attack the gods or the Brahmanas, this is yours. Whoever rashly fights you, it will burn to ash, and then it will come back to your hand.'"

"Madhu bowed to Mahadeva and asked for more. 'Lord, let this dart belong to my family forever.' Shiva said, 'That cannot be. But so your prayer is not wasted, one of your sons will carry it, and while he holds it no creature can kill him.' Madhu then built a splendid city. His beloved wife was Kumbhinasi, daughter of Viswavasu and Anala. Their son was Lavana, and from boyhood he was fierce and cruel and gave himself to wickedness. Madhu watched his son go wrong and grieved, but he said nothing to him. At last Madhu left this world for the realm of Varuna. Before he went, he placed the dart in Lavana's hands and told him everything about the boon. And with that dart, Lavana now torments the three worlds, and the ascetics most of all."

"Many kings have been asked to save us," Bhargava said, "and none has. But you destroyed Ravana with all his armies and chariots. There is no other king on earth who can do this. Please, free us from Lavana." Rama joined his hands and asked, "What does he eat? How does he live? Where is his home?" The sages told him. Lavana lives in Madhuvana. His life is pure savagery, and his food is every living thing, ascetics above all. Each day he kills lions and tigers, deer and birds and people by the thousand, and feeds on them, like Death himself at the end of the world. Rama said to them, "I will kill that Rakshasa. Let your fear go." With that promise given, he turned to his brothers.

"Who will kill Lavana?" Rama asked. "You decide. Shall it be Bharata, or Shatrughna?" Bharata spoke at once, steady and brave. "I will kill him. Give this task to me." Then Shatrughna, Lakshmana's younger brother, rose from his golden seat and bowed to the king. "Bharata has already done a great thing," he said. "He ruled Ayodhya while you were gone, and all that time he carried his grief for you in his heart. He suffered. He slept on a bed of sorrow, lived on fruits and roots, and wore rags. After all that, he should not be made to bear more trouble, my king, while I, his servant, am standing here." Rama heard him and said, "So be it. Then you will do as I say."

"I will make you king of Madhu's city," Rama went on, "or of the land around it, and Bharata can rest. You are brave and skilled. You can build a city on the Yamuna and make its lands prosper. A ruler who leaves his people without a king goes to hell. Kill Lavana, and then rule that kingdom justly. And say nothing more against it. A younger brother must obey his elder. Accept the crowning that Vasishtha and the priests will give you." Shatrughna was overcome with shame. Slowly he said, "This does not seem right. How can you crown a younger brother when an elder one lives? Bharata had already vowed to go, and I spoke over him. That was my wrong, and this is my penalty. I will not answer twice. I will obey. Only let no sin fall on me for it."

Rama was delighted. He said to Bharata and Lakshmana, "Gather everything the crowning needs. I will install him this very day. Call the priests, the citizens, the ministers." They did so, and the warriors and the Brahmanas came into the palace with the priest and all that the ceremony required. Then the sacred waters were poured over Shatrughna, and the whole palace was glad. Crowned, he shone like the sun, like Skanda when Indra and the gods crowned him long ago. The citizens and the learned Brahmanas were full of joy. Kaushalya and Sumitra and Kaikeyi and the other queens raised blessings through the palace. And far away, on the banks of the Yamuna, the sages felt that Lavana was as good as dead already.

Rama took his crowned brother onto his lap and spoke to him gently. "This divine arrow is yours. It never misses, and with it you will kill Lavana. It was made when the self-born god lay on the great ocean, unseen, and Madhu and Kaitabha and other demons were crushing the world. In his anger he made this arrow, which nothing can withstand, and killed them with it before the worlds were made. I did not loose it even against Ravana, because I feared what it would do to living things. Now listen. Lavana keeps Rudra's dart in his house and worships it. He goes out hunting and carries it when someone challenges him. So stand at his city gate before he comes home, and call him to fight while he has no weapon. There is no other way."

"Take four thousand horses, two thousand chariots, a hundred elephants, merchants, singers, and gold and silver," Rama said. "Keep your soldiers fed and happy, and speak kindly to them. Men far from wives and friends need food and gifts. Send the army ahead, then follow, and go quietly so Lavana never learns you are coming. If he sees an enemy first, he will destroy him. Strike when the rains begin. Then he will think no one will come and will leave his dart behind. Let the army go now with the ascetics leading, while the Ganges is still easy to cross. Camp it on the far bank, and go on alone with your bow." Shatrughna told his captains, "Halt where you know the way. Harm no one." He bowed to the three queens, circled Rama, Lakshmana and Bharata, touched the priests' feet, and set out.

His army went ahead. Shatrughna waited a month in Ayodhya and then went alone. After two nights on the road he reached the beautiful hermitage of the sage Valmiki. He bowed and said, "I would like to stay here tonight. I am on Rama's business, and tomorrow I go into the dreadful forest." "Stay, and do not hesitate," Valmiki said. "This hermitage belongs to the house of Raghu." Shatrughna washed his feet, ate fruits and roots, and was content. Then he asked, "Whose sacrificial things are those, to the east?" Valmiki said, "They belonged to your ancestor Saudasa, father of Virjashaha. Saudasa loved to hunt. Once he found two Rakshasas shaped like tigers, who had emptied the forest of its deer. In anger he killed one. The other cried, 'You killed my companion for nothing. You will pay,' and vanished."

"Years later Virjashaha became king, and Saudasa held a great horse-sacrifice here, with Vasishtha as priest. As it ended, the Rakshasa took Vasishtha's form and said, 'Feed me meat today.' The king told his cooks to prepare it, and the Rakshasa, in a cook's shape, served human flesh. Vasishtha saw it and cursed him in fury: 'This shall be your food.' Saudasa raised water in his palms to curse him back, but his queen stopped him: 'He is our teacher.' So he let the water fall on his own feet, and they turned dark. From then he was called Kalmashapada. When Vasishtha learned of the Rakshasa's trick, he said, 'My curse stands, but in twelve years you will be free, and you will not remember them.' And so it was." Shatrughna heard the terrible story, bowed to Valmiki, and went into a little thatched hut for the night.
