The story · English
On the very night that Shatrughna took shelter in a small thatched cottage at the hermitage of Valmiki, Sita gave birth to twin sons. It was midnight, and the forest was dark and still. The young disciples of the sage hurried to Valmiki with the news. They did not wait for morning, because what they carried was too important to hold until dawn. Standing before him, they said, "Revered sir, the beloved wife of Rama has given birth to two sons. Please protect them, so that no evil spirit can harm them." Valmiki listened to every word. He knew whose children these were, and he knew what Sita had already suffered to bring them safely into the world. He rose at once.
Valmiki went to the place where Sita lay with her newborn sons. He was a sage who shone with the light of his long austerities, and yet when he looked down at those two babies, his heart filled with a deep and quiet joy. To him they were radiant, like the sun just risen over the edge of the world, like children of the gods. He did not stay long only in wonder. The disciples had asked him to guard the boys, and he set about doing it. He made arrangements to keep away the ghosts and goblins that were said to trouble the newborn in the night. For this he took a handful of sacred kusa grass, and he divided it into two parts.
The upper part of the grass was called kusa, and the lower part was called lava. Valmiki recited sacred mantras over both, and then he turned to the elderly women who were tending Sita. He placed the upper part in their hands and said, "Rub the body of the elder boy with this." Then he gave them the lower part and said, "And rub the body of the younger brother with this." He looked once more at the two children and added, "Because of this, I will name the first son Kusha and the second son Lava. By these names they will be known and celebrated across the earth." So, from a single handful of grass blessed by the sage, the two brothers received both their protection and their names.
The elderly women took the grass from Valmiki's hands with great respect, and they began their watch over the two boys, guarding them through the night. Not far away, in his thatched cottage, Shatrughna heard everything. He heard that Sita had given birth to two sons without any difficulty, and that wise old women of the hermitage had been set to protect them. And in the middle of the night he heard voices singing the glories of Rama, his own elder brother, the father of these children. Shatrughna thought to himself, "How blessed this is, that Sita has given birth to two sons." His heart was so full of that gladness that the whole long night of the month of Sravana seemed to pass in no time at all.
When the night was over, Shatrughna rose and performed his morning rites. Then he went to Valmiki and took his leave of the sage, and he set out once more on his journey toward the west. He travelled for seven nights. At last he reached the hermitage of the holy rishis who lived on the banks of the Yamuna. He took shelter there among them, and he spent the time in easy and pleasant conversation with Chyavana and the other ascetics of that place. He stayed with them through the night, talking and listening. And Shatrughna, the great-hearted and heroic prince of the Raghu line, was deeply happy, carrying with him the knowledge that Rama's two sons had been born safe in Valmiki's forest.
