The story · English
When night fell, Shatrughna went to the sage Chyavana, son of Bhrigu, and asked him plainly. "How strong is Lavana? What can his dart do? Who has it destroyed before?" Chyavana answered with a story. Long ago, he said, Ayodhya had a king named Mandhata, son of Yuvanashva, a man famous across the three worlds. Mandhata brought the whole earth under his rule, and then he turned his eyes upward. He began preparing to conquer the world of the gods. He vowed to take half of Indra's throne and half his kingdom, and to have the gods worship him. Indra and the immortals were badly frightened. So Mandhata climbed to the heavens, holding to that vow.
Indra did not fight him. He spoke to him softly. "You have not truly become king even among men," he said. "How can you rule heaven when the earth is not fully yours? If the whole world really obeys you, then come, bring all your servants and soldiers, and sit on the throne of the gods." Mandhata was stung. "Who on earth has ever refused my orders?" he asked. Indra told him. "Lavana, the night-ranger, the son of Madhu. He lives in Madhuvana, and he is not under your control." The king heard those hard words and could say nothing. He lowered his head in shame and fell silent. Then he took his leave of Indra and went back down to the earth.
Angry, Mandhata gathered his army and his chariots and marched on Madhuvana. He sent a messenger ahead to call Lavana out to battle. The messenger said many insulting things to Lavana, and Lavana ate him. When the messenger did not return, Mandhata lost patience and began to shower Lavana with arrows from every side. Lavana only laughed. He picked up his dart and threw it. The dart blazed up and burned the king, his servants and his whole army to ash, then flew back into Lavana's hand. "That is its strength," said Chyavana. "But listen. Tomorrow morning Lavana will go out hunting for meat, and he will leave the dart behind. If he cannot reach it, your victory is certain."
They talked of how the fight could be won without danger, and the night passed quickly. At clear morning Lavana left his city to gather food. Shatrughna crossed the Yamuna with his bow in his hand and took his stand at the gate of Madhu's city. At noon Lavana came home, carrying many thousands of animals, and saw a man waiting at his gate with a weapon. "What do you plan to do with that?" he said. "I have eaten thousands of armed men like you. Death has already taken hold of you. I am fully fed, so how will you enter my mouth of your own accord?" He laughed again and again. Shatrughna wept with anger, and a burning light seemed to pour from his whole body.
"I want single combat with you," Shatrughna said. "I am the son of King Dasharatha, brother of the wise Rama, and my name is Shatrughna. You are the enemy of every living thing, and you will not survive me." Lavana laughed aloud. "Fate has delivered you to me. Ravana was my aunts' brother, and Rama killed him over a woman. I let that pass. I have killed your kin before, and I will kill the ones still living and the ones not yet born. Very well, I will fight you. Wait here while I fetch my weapon." Shatrughna answered at once. "Where will you go while I live? A sensible man never lets an enemy walk away. Take a last look at the world. I am sending you to Yama."
Lavana was enraged. He clapped his hands, ground his teeth and kept telling Shatrughna to wait. Shatrughna said, "I was not born when you beat those other kings. As the gods watched Ravana fall, the sages will watch you fall. My arrows will enter your heart the way sunlight enters a lotus." Lavana tore up a huge tree and flung it at his chest. Shatrughna cut it into a hundred pieces. Lavana threw tree after tree, and Shatrughna cut them all down with three or four hundred arrows. His arrows struck Lavana and did not hurt him at all. Laughing, Lavana uprooted one more tree and smashed it onto Shatrughna's head. Shatrughna fell. A terrible cry went up from the sages, the gods, the Gandharvas and the Apsaras.
Lavana believed Shatrughna was dead. He had his chance to go inside, but he did not, and he did not take up his dart. He began hauling in his food. Within moments Shatrughna came to his senses and stood again at the gate, weapon in hand, while the sages praised him. He took up a splendid arrow that never missed. Its light filled the ten directions. It was fast as lightning, heavy as a mountain, smeared with red sandal like blood, with beautiful feathers, like the fire at the end of the world. And Lavana was slain. The gods, led by Agni and Indra, came to him. "Child, you have won. Ask for a boon." Shatrughna put his hands to his head. "Let this lovely city of Madhu be my capital. That is all I ask."
The gods were delighted. "It will be so. It will become a beautiful capital called Surashena." They rose into the sky, and Shatrughna sent for his soldiers camped on the banks of the Ganges. In the month of Sravan they began to settle. Over twelve years the city grew. The fields filled with crops, Indra sent rain in its season, and under Shatrughna's protection the people grew brave and free of sickness. Along the Yamuna the city curved like a half moon, full of shops, streets, gardens and traders from many lands, and Shatrughna adorned the white houses Lavana had built. He was content. Then he thought, "The twelfth year has come. Now I will see Rama's feet." With a hundred chariots and his horsemen, he set out.
After seven halts on the road, Shatrughna reached the hermitage of Valmiki. He bowed at the sage's feet and accepted water, welcome and food. Valmiki spoke warmly. "You have done something very hard. Lavana killed hundreds of mighty kings with all their armies, and you killed him easily. Rama struggled to kill Ravana, and you did this great work without trouble. The whole world is free of fear. I was there in Indra's assembly and saw your fight myself, and I am glad." He smelled the crown of Shatrughna's head, the deepest sign of love. After the meal, Shatrughna heard the deeds of Rama sung in Sanskrit, set to an instrument, from beginning to end. He wept with joy, sat stunned, and found himself breathing hard in wonder, hearing past things as if they were happening now.
His soldiers bowed their heads. "Where are we?" they whispered to one another. "Is this a dream? We are hearing things here we never saw." They turned to Shatrughna. "You should ask Valmiki about this." Shatrughna said no. "It is not right for us to question him like that. This hermitage holds many wonders. It is not fitting to ask out of curiosity." He bowed to the sage and went to his own quarters. He lay down but did not sleep. All night he turned the song of Rama over in his mind, and the night went by in no time. In the morning he finished his prayers, folded his hands and asked Valmiki and the other sages for leave to go and see Rama. Valmiki embraced him and let him go.
