Borrowed Eyes
Bhagavad Gita 11.8
Meaning · English
You cannot see me with these eyes of yours, the ones you were born with. I give you divine sight. Now behold my majestic power, my yoga of lordship.
Krishna has just offered Arjuna the whole universe to look at, and here he admits a difficulty: the offer cannot be taken up with the eyes Arjuna has. Three ideas carry the verse. Chakshus means eye, the organ of sight. Divya means divine, belonging to a higher order than the ordinary. Aishwaram, from ishvara, means lordly, having to do with sovereign power, and yoga here means his own power to hold everything together. Plainly, the physical eye is built for things of a certain size and kind, and what Krishna is about to show does not fit it. So he does not ask Arjuna to try harder. He gives him new sight, as a gift, and only then says to look. The reason is stated in the verse itself: Arjuna's own eyes fall short, and Krishna supplies what is missing. What it asks of Arjuna is to receive and to look. Shankara reads the divine eye as a grace that comes through the Lord's will. Ramanujacharya reads it as a gift that follows devotion. Madhva stresses that the sight is given by God and cannot be earned by effort alone.
A child at a concert stands behind a tall crowd and sees only backs and coats. A parent lifts her onto their shoulders, and the stage appears. She did not grow taller by wanting to. Arjuna is the child, and the lift is the sight Krishna gives.
1. Pick one thing today that you believe you have fully understood, such as a coworker, a relative, or a habit of your own. 2. Sit with it for two minutes and ask what your usual way of looking cannot show you. 3. Write one sentence naming what you may be missing. 4. Ask one person who sees it differently, and listen to the end without answering.
A woman stands in a hospital corridor after the doctor has explained her father's illness in careful words, and she has nodded through all of it. Hours later she realises she took in almost nothing. What she saw was real, but she could not take it in as it stood. The verse speaks to this kind of moment. Krishna does not scold Arjuna for the limit of his eyes. He names it, then supplies what is lacking. In the corridor, that would mean admitting she has not understood, asking for the words again, and letting someone she trusts sit beside her and help her see. Ordinary experience confirms that fear and shock narrow what a person can take in, and that help from another makes a difference. The verse does not promise that she will bear the news easily, or that anything in the diagnosis changes. The divine sight it speaks of is Krishna's gift to Arjuna, said as the text's own teaching, and nothing here replaces the doctor's care.
