A Thousand Suns at Once
Bhagavad Gita 11.12
Meaning · English
If the splendor of a thousand suns were to rise in the sky all at once, it might resemble the splendor of that great personality.
Sanjaya reaches for a comparison and admits it may fall short. Three words carry it. Sahasra means a thousand, a number chosen because it is too large to picture. Bha means splendor, shining light. Mahatma joins maha, great, with atma, self, so it names a great one, here the form Arjuna is seeing. The plain sense is this: picture a thousand suns rising in the sky at the same instant. Even that blaze, Sanjaya says, might match the brightness of this great being. The word "if" matters. He does not say the two are equal, only that one might be like the other. He says it because he is describing a sight to a blind king who cannot see it, so he borrows the brightest thing anyone knows and multiplies it. The comparison shows the limit of his words as much as the size of the light. This is Sanjaya's account as a witness, in that moment, and it is his view. Shankara takes the great one to be Ishvara, God as ruler of the world, seen through the sight granted to Arjuna. Ramanuja reads him as the Supreme Person, whose radiant body is real and personal. Madhva holds that the light belongs to the Lord alone and is unlike any made light.
In a house lit by one weak bulb, someone tries to describe a desert noon to a friend. They say it is like a thousand bulbs switched on together. The bulbs are the best they have, and the noon is far brighter. The thousand suns are Sanjaya's bulbs, and the great personality is the noon.
1. Today, when something stops you, such as a sunset, a newborn, or a piece of music, stay quiet for ten seconds before you describe it. 2. Then notice which comparison you reach for first, and where it falls short of what you saw. 3. Tell one person about it in plain words, and let yourself say that words do not quite cover it.
A man raised in a city climbs onto his village rooftop during a power cut and looks up. The sky is crowded with stars he never knew were there. He opens his mouth and nothing useful comes out. He says it is like diamonds spilled on black cloth, then laughs at himself, because that is not it either. This is the moment Sanjaya's words speak to. The man does not stop at silence. He reaches for the brightest things he knows, then notices the comparison is smaller than the sight. He also stays looking instead of hurrying to name it. Ordinary experience agrees that eyes need a few minutes in the dark before they take in what is there. Sanjaya's thousand suns work the same way: they stretch the mind toward something it cannot yet hold, and the verse treats that stretching as honest. It does not promise that the man will understand what he saw, or that the feeling will last past morning. It also does not say the sky has anything to teach him about his troubles. It records one witness, struck dumb, doing his best.
