Meaning · English

Other great asuras, their limbs drenched in floods of blood, kept shouting at the Goddess, "Stand, stand." It was a battle that made the hair stand on end. The earth was covered with fallen asuras, with chariots, elephants and horses, and the ground where that great battle was fought could not be crossed. At once, rivers of blood began to flow there, in the midst of the asura army, among its elephants, its asuras and its horses.

Three words carry the passage. Mahasura means a great asura, a warrior of rank, not a foot soldier. Lomaharshana, the word for the battle, means hair standing up on the skin, the shiver of fear or awe. Agamya means not to be gone through, from a, not, and gam, to go. It describes ground where no one can walk. Now the clauses. First, the asuras who are left are already soaked in their own blood, and they still shout at the Goddess to stand and fight. The cry shows how little they understand what they face. Second, the field is so heaped with fallen chariots, elephants, horses and bodies that the earth itself is blocked. Third, blood runs in streams through the middle of the asura army. The sage gives the sight plainly, with no relish. Medhas tells this to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant whose family cast him out. Both want to know why the Goddess, whom Medhas calls the great Maya, holds such power over everything. The battle is his evidence. The asuras are many and strong, and the field shows what becomes of them. The cry of Stand, stand shows pride that does not end even when ruin is plain. The passage asks nothing of the listener. It only asks them to see how large the Goddess's power is before the hymns come, where the gods will praise her.

Picture a mountain road after a landslide. Boulders, torn trees and wrecked carts fill it from bank to bank, so nothing can pass, and a man still stands in the rubble shouting at the hillside to stop. The blocked road is the field no one can cross. The shouting man is the asura who keeps calling the Goddess to stand.
