Other great demons fell on the ground with their legs cut away. Some, with one arm, one eye, one foot left, were cut in two by the Goddess. Others, though their heads were cut off, fell and rose again. Headless trunks took up the best of weapons and fought the Goddess. Some other headless trunks danced there in the battle, keeping time to the rhythm of the war music, with swords, spears and lances in their hands.
Three words carry this passage. Asura means a demon, one who opposes the gods. Kabandha means a headless trunk, a body with no head to guide it. Maha-asura, great demon, marks these as the strong ones of the buffalo-demon's army. Now the clauses. First, some demons fall with legs cut off, and others are split in two, left with one arm, one eye, one foot. Then the text says that when heads were cut off, some bodies fell and got up again. Headless trunks seized weapons and went on fighting the Goddess. Others danced in the field, moving to the beat of the war drums, still holding swords, spears and lances. Why is this told? Medhas is answering King Suratha, who has lost his kingdom and still cannot stop wanting it back. In Medhas's telling, the picture is of a body that keeps acting after the head, the part that knows and decides, is gone. The fighting goes on from momentum and from the drumbeat, not from any purpose. The sage does not dwell on blood. He shows a force that runs without sight. This fits what the text is building toward: the Goddess is the great Maya who binds, and also the Mother who frees. The demons here are bound by their own drive. The passage asks the listener only to notice how such a drive looks from outside: busy, armed, even rhythmic, and headless.
A wind-up toy keeps marching across the table after you have let go of it, arms swinging, until the spring runs out. Nobody is steering it. The headless warriors are that toy: motion carried by old winding, with no mind left to choose where it goes.
