Some vomited blood, struck hard by the pestle. Some were thrown down on the ground, split through the chest by the spear. Some, left with no gap in their flesh by a flood of arrows, stood on the field of battle. Those tormentors of the gods gave up their lives like mountains falling. Of some the arms were severed, of others the necks were cut. The heads of some fell, and others were torn open through the middle.

Medhas lists how the great asuras fell. He does it plainly and does not linger. Three words carry the picture. Musala is the pestle, a heavy club for pounding grain, and here it is a weapon. Shula is the spear or trident, and it splits the chest. Shailanukarinah means 'like mountains': when these huge warriors died they went down heavily, as a hillside does when it gives way. The other word to hold is tridashardanah, 'tormentors of the gods'. It names who is falling. These are the ones who had been crushing the gods, and Medhas names them that way to explain why their army is being cut down. Taking the clauses in order: some are struck by the club and bleed from the mouth. Some are pierced through the chest and thrown to earth. Some are left with no gap in their bodies by the flood of arrows. Then arms, necks, heads and bodies are cut. Nothing is left standing in one piece. Medhas is answering King Suratha, who lost his kingdom, and the merchant Samadhi, who was cast out by his family. He is telling them about the Goddess, and her power over the great army is the point. He gives no relish and no cheering, only a record of the rout. The teaching he gives is that what looked immovable could not stand before her. The listener is asked only to take in how complete that was, before the hymns that follow.

A tall old chimney that has stood over a town for a hundred years is brought down by a demolition crew. It does not lean or bargain. It folds and drops in a few seconds. Its height was real, but it was never what kept it standing. So with the asuras: their size could not hold them up.
