Meaning · English
Then the Goddess struck down great asuras by the hundred with her trident, her club, showers of spears, swords and other weapons. Some she made fall, dazed by the ringing of her bell. Others she bound with her noose and dragged along the ground. Some were cut in two by the sharp strokes of her sword. Others were beaten down by the fall of her club and lay on the earth.
Medhas names the Goddess's weapons one by one, and each does a different work. Three words carry the passage. Devi means the Goddess, from a root meaning to shine. Asura means one not of the gods, a power that opposes them. Pasha means a noose or snare, a cord that ties and drags. Now the clauses. First, she kills great asuras by the hundred with trident, club, spears and swords. The count is large because the host is large. Second, some fall because the sound of her bell bewilders them. They are not struck at all. Their minds fail first, and then they drop. Third, she ties others with the noose and pulls them along the ground. Fourth, some are cut in two by sword strokes. Fifth, others are crushed by the club and lie still on the earth. The passage works through its list like an inventory, and no weapon is used twice in the same way. Medhas is answering the question the two listeners brought him. Suratha lost his kingdom and Samadhi was cast out by his family, and both want to know what power could bind a person and then free him. He tells them this Goddess meets every kind of opposing force with the means that fits it. Some is cut, some is bound, and some is simply confused by a sound. The noose is worth noticing, since binding is also the work of the great Maya in Medhas's telling. Here the same cord is hers, and she uses it on the asuras.
At a large wedding feast one cook has a knife, a ladle, tongs and a heavy pot, and uses each for its own job without confusion. The Goddess's trident, bell, noose, sword and club are like that: five tools, five kinds of hindrance, and each is met with what suits it.
