Meaning · English

In a moment the Mother destroyed that great army of the asuras, as fire destroys a huge heap of straw and timber. And her lion, roaring loudly, shook his mane and went among the bodies of the gods' enemies as if searching them for their very breath. So the Devi's attendants fought the asuras there, and by that fighting the gods were gladdened. In the sky they let fall a rain of flowers.

Three pictures follow one another. First, the Mother ends the whole army in a moment, the way fire takes a heap of straw and wood. Second, her lion roars, shakes his mane and moves among the fallen as if hunting for their breath. Third, her attendants fight beside her, the gods are pleased, and flowers fall from the sky. Three words carry it. Ambika means 'little mother'. Medhas does not call her a warrior or a queen here but the Mother, and that tells Suratha and Samadhi what kind of power this is. Asu means the breath of life. The lion seems to look for it in the bodies of the demons, and finds none left. Gana means a troop, those counted together. These are the Devi's own company, and they fight with her. The fire comparison is about ease. Straw does not resist fire, and nobody asks how hard the fire worked. The text gives the Goddess's strength by showing how little the army weighs against it. Medhas tells this to two men who have lost kingdom and family and feel overpowered by what holds them. He is describing the Goddess as the Mother who frees, and the flowers show the gods as people relieved of a long fear. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows where the strength lies and who rejoices when it acts.

A child's chalk drawing covers a whole slate, bold and crowded. One pass of a damp cloth and the slate is clean. The drawing only looked large next to other chalk. The cloth belongs to another order, and the army's size counts for nothing against the Mother.
